custom hunting rifle questions

I'm thinking of having a custom hunting rifle built... here is what I am thinking so far: 300 WSM, stiller predator or borden action, Krieger #2 or #3 contour CM bbl, Jewell trigger, mcmillan edge or Hi tech stock, BDL styl- wyatt center feed magazine, pacific tool and gauge bottom metal.. ceramic coat metal for weatherizing, who do you guys recommend for a gun smith to put this package together

Maybe it's just me, but I would want a little heavier barrel if I were going to all the expense to use those components. I would use a #4 contour. A lightweight rifle is overrated for anything other than a real serious multi-day backpack hunt.

I am building a similar rifle right now and using a #4. The barrel is .264. I would have been tempted to use a #5 on a 30 cal barrel. I just found that the #4 and #5s were so much easier to get to shoot, I wasn't stuck with one or two loads that would finally shoot.

There are a lot of good gunsmiths to put something like that together and a few of them that are pretty proud of their work and charge accordingly; choose wisely.

if it was me I would do it myself but since its yours I would look for someone that does a lot of hunting rifles.I would probably go with a #5 or so and have it fluted. a well balanced gun is way better than a rifle with a thin barrel that feels like there is nothing out front and when you pull the trigger you think your shooting an elephant rifle.

In my book, light weight rifles are not overrated for general big game hunting. It really all depends on what the use of the rifle is though. If you're looking to take game out to 300 yds or a bit more, there's no need for a heavy rifle. If you want a gun that is to be used for long range hunting, then the heaviest rifle that your comfortable lugging around would fit the bill better. If you plan on spending lots of time shooting the rifle at the range rather than picking it up a couple times a year to sight in and hunt with...then a heavier barrel would be desirable. I like your entire component list. There are many gunsmiths that can put it together for you.

I should have mine from Long Shot Rifles as soon as Glenn Seekins is done with the detatchable mag and bottom metal for the WSM. If you are looking for a smith that will deliver a hunting rifle with bench gun accuracy, you don't have to look any further.. SEE GUN OF THE WEEK #64
