Savage LRPV 6BR for benchrest?

Hey fellas, I'm looking at trying my hand at 6BR again for some informal local 300yrd bechrest competitions. I have an opportunity to pick up a savage LRPV in 6BR with a 1:8 twist at a very nice price. My question is for those that may have either had or have one would you think this rifle would fit the bill as an informal benchrest rifle?

You will do very well, just gotta find the right load, and it will shoot pretty well,
My first rifle was a Savage 6BR, that's how this whole mess shooting addiction begin. I should have never sold that rifle,
let me know if you need any help finding a load for this rifle

Yea I had a Savage 6br Benchrest model last year that had a barrel issue and ended up getting it fixed and just sold it off as I was over it at the time. I now have a bit more free time on my hands and figured this would be a cheaper way of getting abck into it, but didn't know how well this particular model may fair.

That rig got me Shooter of the year at our Club back when I was shooting Factory Class BR. If I recall my load was 30 grains of Varget behind the Berger 105 VLD's. Just be sure to work up to it.

It's hard to beat a Savage for entry level bench rest. I've had/shot several. Another good thing is that drop in barrels are available and relatively inexpensive. With a hundred dollars or so worth of tools and guages (sp?) and a little mechanical ability, most shooters are able to switch their own barrels.

Wow that's awesome! I just didn't know how the stock of the LRPV would fair shooting from the bench but it is a nice stock to come on a factory rifle. Did you do anything to it other than just work a load up for it?

If you plan to go no further than using that rifle as is, yes. Nothing you can do other than a barrel and trigger but not 2 oz., bed it the rear bag will be special due to the taper they have on the bottom stock. If you plan to build on it, no....... jim

No I just wanted something to just mess around with at a couple of the local clubs. My tactical shoots take up way more time than Id like admit, this would be just for some fun and fellowship. Was just curious if it would fit the bill for bench rest shooting and would be nice if it were at least competitive, but I'm mostly just doing it to have a good time and hang out with a couple friends that shoot there..

If you are only going to shoot 300 yds max. I would look for a used BR gun, i saw some on here very reasonable. The Savage you can get a good one or POS. If you get the latter you loose and if it used, there is a reason they got rid of it....... jim

The big point is you said bench rest, 300 and less is short range. This a free recoil type of shooting and a rifle can not do it with out a 2 oz. trigger. ...... jim

Only change was a Rifle Basic Trigger. I'm not a fan of the Accutrigger. Like what has been mentioned on other posts, the barrels are a crap shoot. I lucked out and got a good one.

Well like I mentioned in the initial post I have an opportunity to get this model at a discounted price due to the shop wanting to move it after someone not coming back to pick it up. Yea I know the Target Accutrigger will lock up if you get it to light witch is a major pain! Like I said I'm not looking to burn up the bench rest circuit just go out and have some fun as my current bolt guns just aren't setup for bench style shooting that these guys do, so figured this might be a cheaper way to get out with them and have a little fun and if it should happen to be competitive that's a bonus.

Well I ordered a set of Redding dies and a 50rd box of preloaded 105gr Lapua ammunition along with some 107gr Sierra MatchKings to try out later on.. So I guess it looks like I'm gonna give this a shot, lol

Try Varget & RL15 each/every rifle seems to like different bullet, powder, primers, etc.

Enjoy your journey. If the stock barrel doesn't work out, Northland Shooters Suply can always hook you up with a Criterion or a Shilen barrel. Guaranteed they will shoot and you can do the upgrade yourself..

I would have waited and got a good die to fit your chamber closer from Harrell's. The cheap fix is a crown job, i have one that didn't have lands in the last 1/8" of the muzzle. Look around at one time they made a 2oz. trigger for them, but the current 6oz. is a step up..... oh bed it will be a help....... jim

Good advice there on the Harrell's die. I just got one for my new 30BR. Only took a few days. I fired two cases four times only neck sizing to hold the bullet each time. Those cases should match my chamber as good as any could. Ended up with a #2.5

For what I'm gonna do I think I should be ok with redding set. I will however look into one of those triggers, thanks for the info.
