25 cal varminter

I don't get upset when someone hi-jacks my threads, especially when they're enlightening me :)! Feel free to hi-jack away Randy!

Mike

Thank you, Mike.

The following are "ball-park" capacities of several .25 cal. cartridge options, determined by a pal of mine, using RL-15 - he loves the stuff - and filling to level full, as 'sliced' off using a razor blade - I believe he used an average of ten cases each. Of course, these were as fired, from barrels/chamberings which either one, or, both of us own: brass and chambers vary somewhat.

1) .250 Savage - 42.4 Gr.

2) 25x47 Lapua/HBR - 43.6

3) .250 Savage Ack. Imp. -46.7 Gr. (this is for my .350" long-neck version - slightly more than a "true" .250 Sav. A.I.)

4) .257 A.I. Roberts - 58.4 Gr.

5) .257 IdiotMag (.25/300WSM) - 76.3 Gr.

6) .257 Weatherby Mag. - 76.3 Gr.

Not the most scientific comparison, none the less, a reasonable perspective.

There are, as pointed out in this thread, many good options - for pure horsepower, and
[probably] a more commonly available reamer, the .257 Wby. is though to beat: even with the contemporary powder selections, there is always a point of diminishing returns.

The smaller cases are quite efficient, and, with the lighter bullets - 100 Gr. and under - can deliver surprising velocities! Really, your best option is to obtain one of each!:D RG

Kinda back to square one. The smith I thought would be able to do the work turned out to be a fly by night!!! Guess I'll just have to keep looking!

May i recommend Cresent Customs in North Kansas City. Moon does excellent work and is a great person. I just had him work over my 22-250.

Mike, Say a prayer, you just dodged a bullet! Be thankful that you found out BEFORE said smith built your rifle and got your money.... or worse--just got your money! dedogs

The reason I called him a fly by night is he's only around here in the warm summer months and is in Texas the rest of the year. You would think that would be pertinent info to put on your web page?

Are you located somewhere near Dwight Scott, Mike?

Perhaps John Pierce?

Pierce is a little over 2 hours away and Dwight Scott is further away yet! I know Pierce and Scott both do great work but, with my work schedule it's pretty much impossible to do anything with either of these guys. That's why I was trying to find someone local but, that's proving very difficult!

Of course, I left out a multitude of potential 2.5 Cal wild-cats, including some really BIG options, like a .257UltraMag! I just stuck to personal exposure, thinking some really BIG BOOMER owners would offer their views/experiences. There's a LOT open territory out there! Good shootin'! RG

You Mean some thing like this, I present to you exhibit A

I also have a 257 that is made from a necked down 300 Win Mag, that falls somewhere between the Rum and an STW, I don't know if it has an official wildcat name. Other than what I call her The "Bitch" Hey what can I say she is a nasty round.LOL

Thank you for sharing, Dean! :) Will you show us some comparative capacities, bullet weights, and velocities? RG

I will get back to you with the details, I am always hesitant to share details,IE: data, velocity, ect this forum and many others has been very unkind to me in the past, when I have posted my results and findings. And even though they can't prove me wrong, it does not stop the name calling and character assassination,
on another note this is what I am buying with my income tax return, I have wanted one for a long time and is the nicest one I can afford it is a new model for this year. Let me know what you think.

PS: It is not like I can't defend myself, I just don't want to put up with it, I come here to share and enjoy myself not argue and defend my posts.

Very nice Dean! I'm envious to say the least!

Dean, no need to list exact DATA - capacities and your MVs will satisfy me - have been considering a 25DAKOTA, or, 25RUM reamer. I can understand your perspective.

Thing I didn't like about the 7mm RUM was that the DAKOTA, with 15% less powder was, with all but the heaviest bullet weights, within 25-40 FPS. I'm very curious regarding your experiences and which powders work best in your 25BOOMERS!

Good luck with the Grizzly. RG

I have never found or even try to find the max in either of these rounds, there is no load data available so I am running on blind faith no matter how much experience or courage I am feeling. I will tell you that I never use Mag Primers and have never run into "Bridging" which cause pressure spikes. And also just so you know another one of my loading habits is I am perfectly fine with Flat Primers, I draw the line at cycling problems "Sticky Bolt" another Quirk that I have is I don't start with a certain powder and then increase they amount of powder in steps IE: 80gr, 80.5gr, 81gr, ect. The way I go about it is I always have a full case even compressed, I always start with slow powders lets say Retumbo and if that works, I will go to H1000 then from there then RL25 and increase the the burn rate instead of they amount or volume of powder. I have always found with no exceptions that my highest FPS and tightest groupings, have always come with a full case of the fastest powder I can get away with.
