20-222 -- I'm Interested

I've got a 700 ADL in .222 Rem, that by any standard has a fried barrel. I've become very interested in the .20 cartridges, and particularly the 20-222. I'd also like to try the Remage nut system, and I thought this rifle might be the one to do this with.

My reasons for sticking with the triple duce are that it is milder and easier on barrels than the hotter twenties, and it would simply be an easy switch for me. I'd go Vartarg but the brass just seems like more of a hassle than 222's.

Seems like the the 20-222 is the least common of the 20's, and I wonder why.?? I'd love to hear info and opinions from anyone who can help me decide or accomplish this project. Thanks in advance for any input. jd

The 20 Prac. Makes alot of sense in that ease of necking down, availability of 223 brass and cost, and near 204 ruger velocity.

I`ve got reamers .20-222 AI ( Chamber and Sizing ) and dies ( forming / seating / sizing ) that i`d sell if you are interested...

Want to build one, but i have too many other irons in the fire right now.....

Love the .222 case.....

20-222 I would expect to build in popularity with more 204 bullets available. The Berger 55gr varmint has an amazing BC; but may be hard to find a barrel maker with that twist.

17-222 could be really interesting too. Triple deuce.net has some preliminary info.

I might just serve to muddy the water for you. I have a 20 Bobcat that I just love. It is a 20-222 AI. Wonderful little cartridge that provides all the benefits the Ackley brings with it. Just something else to consider.

JDS, I just got a 20/222 up and running this fall. Love it so far. Have shot 16 coyotes so far and it's easy on fur with the correct bullets. I'm getting 3750fps with 8208 and 205's in Win brass shooting 35gr Berger. Easy to form/one pass thru 222 S die and load & shoot. Similar ballistics to a 22/250 out to 300.
I say build it and enjoy, you'll love it!

I'd think a 20-222 would be the perfect answer to the "should I do a Vartarg or a 204 Ruger" question. Should spit the velocity difference and be a sweetheart.

Have one...the barrel started life as a 20BR w/9 twist....after 1200 rds or so...I got bored & sent it back to Pac Nor and had them rechamber to 20-222....of all my p/dog rigs..it has to be my favorite....Lapua brass...H322 powder & 40 gr moly V max....dead dogs easily out to 600 yds...no recoil....yes rifle weighs 17#...built on Savage target action..glass is Vortex PST 6-24...barrel length is now 26"....my other p/dog rigs are 20VT..20PT..223AI...6BR...

Hey, thanks to you guys who have responded, or PM'd me. I'm more firm on this chamber now than I was, and just need to poke around a little more to find the barrel. Haven't talked to Pac Nor yet. Barrel Bros is expecting a shipment of 20's sometime this month, but they don't have that reamer I guess.

This is gonnna be a rifle I'll carry for coyote calling, so I want to stay fairly light, maybe even #4 sporter contour. jd

BARREL ORDERED!! Remage, oops-- Pac Nut attachment system. 20-222 Cartridge.

I got with the program today, and did the Pac Nor order form. I went with the stainless, super match, in the #6 Sporter contour. Having them nip it at 24". I decided on the 11 twist. Standard target crown. Tell me where I've screwed up. I can still call them. They're actually not to far from me in Brookings. Might be a good excuse for a road trip to go pick it up. Haven't been to the coast for awhile.

This is the first re-barrel I've ever done, and it's a big thing for a tight wad like me.:) jd

Photos when it is done! Hope you are healing up there buddy!

Parker, i'll be getting ahold of you for a die or dies when I figure out what neck diameter.

I about drove myself nuts deciding which barrel contour to get. I hope I didn't bone it. It will fit in one of the sporter stocks I have, but there isn't much room to spare. jd

I have a hand held file from Brownells that I use for opening wood stocks channel...you can borrow it if it will work for you, just ship it back. Let me know about dies and PM me when you know. Working there at office during SHOT, so i will be right there.

Kids are going to OK to college this summer. We should all meet in a neutral state and hunt! I will bring my plain ol duece, you guys can outshoot me with the wildcats.

I really appreciate that, but I think I need to get my own. I'm not done with barrel channels I think. I would be interested to see what type you've got.

I should probably get head space gauges also, unless there's a good and safe way to do without. Don't need to get too bound up about this yet, as the barrel may take 8 weeks or more to arrive.:( God willing, I'll be a two legged man again by then. jd
