Recommend a top *traditional?* gunsmith (Bluing/walnut, etc)

If you had a fine, walnut stocked, pretty blued pre64 M70 rifle that you wanted to have some work done, really good work…let’s say bed the stock, re-crown, etc. Who would be your guy? How about if you wanted the action trued also? Same guy?

Thanks,
K

Greetings,

I would seek out Mr. James Cloward. Jim has probably built (perfected) more M-70's than anyone in the US. He is a true artist with both wood and metal.
His phone is 425-334-3006, Lake Stevens WA.

Good luck,
John

I like Jim Kobe. gundoktr on this forum. Jim's Gunshop in Bloomington, Mn. He has done 2 full custom's for me and will start on another walnut stock for me soon.

Last one Jim did for me.

Butch that piece of wood is flawless, absolutely gorgeous. He must be the guy to go to.

Thanks guys for the suggestions; I will investigate.

I don’t see many guys showcasing the old fashion bluing skills, unless I missed it. I guess that gets shipped to someone else for the finish…

Thanks Butch. Can’t tell from the picture….ocean deep blue that looks like chrome?

Sorry, I'm not a gloss blue person. I prefer the rich rust blue. If you like the glossy Weatherby Blue, I do have a bluing guys contact for you.

I dont know about Weatherby blue…but ‘50s - ‘60s deep sheen bluing is what does it for me. Colt use to do heck of a job on their handguns. I’ve seen Turnbull do a few good ‘ins.

Steve Durren who works out of Johnson's Sporting Goods in Adrian, MI. You can see some of his work on the cover of the most recent Single-Shot Journal.

There are quite a few guys that are at Kobe's level in the Custom Gun Makers Guild, including Kobe himself. Contact them and find someone who you like his style. Styles vary a lot. I don't know if they still have a show every year. I went for a few years and you can meet many of them and see their work first hand.

The ACGG show is in conjunction with the Dallas Safari Club International the first weekend of January. It is a fantastic show.

I went to the shows for a lot of years when they did them in Reno. I did the metal on one of the rifles that won best table at the show for one our local guild stock makers about 8-9 years ago.
