Stiller 2500XR Precision Trainer

After reading quite a bit about precision trainers on another forum, the availability of 2500XR-based rifles from Euro Optic, another member's personal Stiller 2500XR project, and Mike Bush's repeater conversions of Rem 40X actions, I decided to go with one of the Stiller actions for my own rifle. Since Stiller had these actions in stock, it didn't take long to get one, and I already had a Krieger blank, along with an Ultimate PTG reamer from PTG. There was also an extra Manners T4A stock in the shop, so away we went...

After completing the rifle & shooting a bit with it, I found a surplus Manners Elite T4A on their inventory list, which had been made for the run of trainers from Euro Optic. I had need of the T4A that I'd used for the trainer, so went ahead and bought the Elite stock in GAP camo from Manners. Since Euro Optic had commissioned Seekins Precision to make the bottom metal for their run of 40 rifles, this stock had the bottom inlet for that BM. However, Seekins had entered into a proprietary agreement with EO, and so had made only 40pcs of this BM, which were sent - along with the drawings for it - to EO. In short, there were none of these BMs in captivity. However, once I realized that Seekins' regular DBM for CF rifles had the same outline as the custom RF BM, I bought one of their CF units and milled its magazine box nearly flush to fit into the Manners inlet.

Manners' inlet for the bbl'd action was very close to perfect, but since I'd used a .250" thick tapered recoil lug and needed to inlet for it, I went ahead with bedding the action with Marine Tex. I also had to mill some clearance cuts for the Jewell HVR trigger in both the stock & BM.

I'd originally mounted a Bushnell ET6245FG scope, but after receiving a couple of Athlon Optics Cronus 4.5-29x56 scopes, decided to put one on this rifle and see what I thought of it. Downside to that was that now I've been spoiled by the quality of this scope, and would probably buy another one if I needed it for a CF rifle project instead of going back to the Bushy - which is a perfectly good scope for this application.

My Stiller has been very nearly 100% reliable - basically, any issues with feeding or ejection have been my fault - usually due to short-stoking the bolt.

Accuracy has been all that I could hope for with Wolf, SK, or Lapua match ammo. I played with some sample lots of Eley Tenex & Match EPS purchased several years ago for another project, but found no better accuracy, while having some issues getting the flat-nose EPS-type bullets to feed while the rifle was in the 1st Manners stock with different BM. After bedding the rifle into the Elite T4A with Seekins BM, those feeding issues mostly went away.

After all this, I'm still going to send the older 722-style 40X action to Jonathan Elrod to have it converted into a repeater, as well as to have a Benchmark 22RF bbl blank fitted & chambered. I still think there's a real advantage to using Mike Bush's AICS-type magazines for a 22RF, as they'll facilitate a much faster reload in timed-fire competition. Should have it up & running by around Christmas - will post photos & commentary when I've got some experience with it.

Harvest season must be over Dennis.

What cool little Rifle. This is the first Repeater action I have seen by Stiller. Most as you know I see are the group of prone shooters who use the single shot ones. Pretty Neat.

Russel

I built my trainer on a Manners 2Adj comb with Lilja 1x9 NBRSA on a Lonestar action prior to the 2500 actio being available. Super accurate and quiet with the suppressor on it. Will shoot anything from 38-60 gr pills.

Russ, The 2500XR was designed from the start to be a reliable repeater, using Savage magazines. Their other repeater (2500XS) was designed to meet the BR repeater rules, not to be used as a true repeater. The other 2500XR shooter I mentioned had considerable problems with extraction & ejection with his action, but it was mostly with Eley ammo. With a lot of help from Jerry Stiller, his gunsmith, and his own work, he's got his rifle running reliably now. Fortunately, mine ran well right off the bat, so I've been able to concentrate on testing different brands & levels of match ammo instead of having to work to make it reliable. I bought a few 1/4" thick targets made from AR500 - from 3" rounds & squares up to 6" & 8" gongs for 200+yd shooting. I use the 3" targets for practicing positional shooting at 100, or even 200yds when there's little breeze. But it's much less frustrating to shoot at the 6" & 8" targets from 200....as an old friend is fond of saying - "If you're not hitting your target very often, get a bigger target."...lol.

Though I normally police all my brass off the shooting mat, it's nice not to have to worry about losing $$$ Lapua brass in the weeds. And no reloading after a long shooting session, nor really any serious need to clean the bbl afterwards, either. I'm getting pretty good accuracy out of Wolf Match Target & Match Extra, as well as SK Std+ & Rifle Match. Just received some sample lots of Lapua Center-X, and after one 100yd range session with more breeze than I care for when testing, got a bit better & more consistent accuracy. But unless I'm shooting a match with absurdly tiny targets, I'm satisfied with the accuracy I get out of the less expensive grades of SK & Wolf.

Hope you & yours have a Happy Thanksgiving!

The BM that Seekins made for the Euro Optic build was closed over with a slot for the magazine to extend through. Mine has an open-bottom, since it was originally made to accept AiCS-style mags. It's kinda fugly when viewed from below, but short of making some sort of cover to mimic what they made for EO, it's the best I could come up with. From the side, it looks just like what it is - Seekins DBM for CF rifles.

Dennis,
Love the rifle! Glad you posted it up here, I should have put my build thread up here a long time ago...

I am the other shooter with a rifle built off the 2500XR that had a few feeding hiccups Dennis mentioned. I don't want to hijack Dennis's thread but with his permission I will post a link to my build thread from the Hide. There is a bit of info in there about the actions and some of the issues I was having.

But to echo Dennis they are great actions, and even though I had to sort out a few minor issues I am VERY happy with mine! I have owned a few Anschutz 54.18 rifles (factory Anschutz repeaters on the 54 action), other than the 54.18, having Mark Chesebor do his conversion on the 54 action, or Mike Bush's conversion on the 40X action there really is not many other "quality" repeaters out there. **That is not to take anything away from the CZ 452, 453, or 455 rifles as they are great in their own rights but they are not in the same class. Even the Anschutz 54 doesn't compete with the 2500XR or 40X conversion as they just open up so many options with the aftermarket already in place to support them.

Here is a pic of mine with its AI counter part:

Jesse - Glad you joined in! After all, you're the one who inspired me to do the 2500XR build, and I've gotten a lot of good out of mine, so I owe you - not only for posting up all the issues you had with your Stiller, but for sticking with it & seeing it through.

I spoke with both Mike Bush & Jonathan Elrod about doing the repeater conversion on one of the two CMP 40X 22RF single-shots I have. Was interested in doing it myself, but after finding out how hard the older 40X's receiver is when I had to mill the tang for a Timney's safety lever, I decided to leave it to jlrod. I'm sending the older 40X action & Benchmark 3-groove 1-16.5tw sendero contour blank to him next week after Thanksgiving. Am really jazzed about getting that bbl'd action back & getting it bedded into a stock so I can compare it to the Stiller.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am sending Jonathan three (my last two and a buddies) 40Xs next week this time. I am very happy with the two he has done for me so far. Top notch work by a top notch dude.

I keep wishing I'd have bought another couple of those newer 40Xs when the CMP was selling them - but I'd already bought two M52Ds, and three of the 40Xs was all I could afford. Then I let a friend have one of the newer hvy bbl models...so that leaves the older std wt 722-style & one hvy bbl M700-style rifle. The hvy bbl rifle is in such good shape that I hate to mess with it - we'll see how I get along with the older 40X conversion...

Very nice, I cant wait to see how the 40X conversion shoots with the Benchmark. I really like a Benchmark rimfire barrel!

One of these already has a Lilja tight-bore barrel. One of them is getting a Shilen Ratchet that Killough sent me a couple weeks ago.

While the Liljas are accurate and this one is an absolute hammer, I will not go the titebore route again. After 100-150 rounds I start getting random flyers. I took a peek inside a few years back and it fouls pretty fast compared to any other custom barrel.

Currently I have a Benchmark 2 groove, Douglas, Lilja x 2 and this Shilen.

Yeah, interesting - I just dug out the order I placed with Lilja, hoping I hadn't spec'd the tight bore after reading Hoser's comments on his. Wouldn't you know it - I did order a tightbore. Gotta give them a call, just in case they haven't already drilled the bore on my blank.

Well, the folks at Lilja are lapping the blank I ordered right now. It should ship next week. Will just have to give it a try and see if I get along any better with it than Hoser did with his. I know Krieger also offers tight bore 22RF blanks, and Lilja says they sell more of them than they do the std bore bbls....time will tell, I guess.

I'm sure your tight bore will be fine. You may have to clean a little more often than your use to, most Rimfire guys clean after every target anyway. A few years ago I had my smith fit a 4 groove Lilja standard bore in 17 twist when all the rage was tite bores. That barrel was a hammer on a stiller action, I shot a ARA 2500 with it in no time. My shooting buddy and I tag teamed on that rifle for a while and we finished 1 and 2 at several matches. We nick named her " wobble bore" and laughed all the way home.

Rlb40x - Thanks for posting that. This Lilja was ordered with the intention of using it on the 2nd of my 40X rifles if I go ahead and convert it to a repeater.

Seems to me that it's counter productive to get too enthused while cleaning 22RF bores - something like a couple of patches wet with Ed's Red seems to be sufficient in my old Anschutz 1611. Got a little carried away with the Krieger I put on my Stiller before beginning to test several lots of SK, Wolf, & Lapua ammo a couple of weeks ago - did the 2 wet patches, then followed up with 5 passes with a saturated bronze brush, then more wet patches. Took me almost two full boxes of some older SK Std+ to get the bore fouled to where it'd shoot consistently again.
