6 mm Remington Vs. 6 mm Creedmoor Vs. 6 XC

I have a 6 mm Remington with a 9.125" twist barrel. I really like it with the 95 gr. Berger's, but I want to play with some of the 115 gr DTAC and the 108 from Berger.

My question is, what are the pros and cons for each before mentioned Cartridge?

6 mm Remington:

6 mm Creedmoor:

6 XC:

The only positive I have is I have dies for the 6 mm Remington. by the way this will be going on a Savage Target action (Single shot) build for long range shooting for fun.

I have searched but I cannot tell the difference between them.... I like the 6 mm Remington due to the longer neck.

What the thoughts on each?
 
I have a Savage PTA / Brux 8 twist barrel chambered in 6XC. I shoot 105 AMax bullets at any groundhog I can see. Killed 2 over 1000 yards, so the 6XC can handle 1000 yards and a little more.
But if you want to get close to one mile, you should probably stick with the 6mm Remington.
 
Depending on barrel length (long vs short) I'd look at the 6 Rem with the longer bbls the other 2 with shorter bbls.
 
6XC is easy to push out past a 1000yds. I've used the 105 Hybrids because they are easier to load. I just tried the 108 BT with positive results I am using a 8 left twist barrel. Depending on your conditions you might have problems stabilizing 108 and definitely the 115.

I just had a 6mm Creedmoor barrel made it only has dabout 60 rounds through it, but accuracy is very close to my 6XC even though it a semi auto. Both shoot sub 1/2moa.

If your plan is to use that heavy of a bullet you need to look at going to a 7.5 twist. You might get away with 8 twist, I haven't tried the 115. Go to Bergers website and use their stability calculator. Another idea would be contact Mark Chanlynn he makes custom barrels and can help you out.
 
I have a 6XC and a 6mm Remington. Both are excellent rounds

You will see similar speeds from all 3, but the 6mm Rem would probably take the win if pressures were pushed to the max. Tho i have never pushed my 6mm Rem that far so I can't say I am 100% sure on that.

My 6XC is set up as a hunting rifle and my 6mm Rem is set up to strictly be a varmint rifle. I run 105s in my 6XC at 2900 fps from a 22" barrel and 75gr Sierra HP bullets in my 6mm Rem at 3480 fps from a 24" barrel . I've had loads in my 6XC reach 2980 fps in the short 22" barrel, but the accuracy wasn't there for me. Not to say the 6XC isnt accurate at those speeds for other folk's rifles, just wasnt with the loads I tried in mine. At least I know it's capable of good speeds in a short pipe. I honestly didnt expect that and was very surprised.

Accuracy is only as good as the rifle build, hand loading, and shooter capability. So that's all on you and your gunsmith.

6XC is the shortest so can give the best seating options in a short magazine. Of course you won't have to worry about that with a single shot target action. Tho just to point out for other folks that are curious, the 6mm Rem is probably better suited in a long action if you want to use the 105s with a magazine. No experience with the Creedmoor and probably never will since it can't give me anything the 6mm Rem and 6XC don't already give me.

Any of the 3 will be a fine choice. Really no advantages or disadvantages unless your OAL is limited for a particular action. Then the Creedmoor and XC would be a better fit.

why complicate things,,,go with a .243 win,,,,(ooo yea,,short neck ,,throat erosion,,yada yada,,,) they all wear out the bbl,,,,Lapua brass is the best there is ,,,just load and shoot,,,I have had dozens of em and some upstart won at Camp Perry with one of em,,,,Roger
 
When I looked at this problem I decided to go 6SLR. Like an XC only with more capacity.

What I really like about the SLR is that it's like a wildcat with training wheels. You just size new brass and shoot, and you can use pretty much any 243 data for starting loads.
 
Thanks all. I already have the 6 mm remnington in the VLS. it has a 9.125" Twist on a 26" tube. I changed the Stock to a B&C tactical. I mounted a Burris Black Diamond on top and I have loved the gun. With that, I chose to keep the 6 mm Remington, due to me having brass dies and other stuff for it. I ordered a mcgowen 8 twist barrel. I have a savage target action as mentioned, and will see what it can do. With my other 6mm, I have been pushing the 95 gr VLDs at a little over 3200 fps, and I have almost 2k rounds through the barrel and I still get 1/2 MOA. Although it was more like 1/4 MOA when I first started shooting it. I will post the info once I get it.

Just wanted to update everyone. I put the criterion barrel on the target action and did some load development with the Hornady 108 gr ELDM. I chose to HBn coat them for longevity purposes. Let me tell you, this gun has been the best thing i have done for a while..... i am exposing LR shooting to my girls and this gun has been the ticket for them. It is a light recoiling gun and is a laser. My daughter used it in a small competition this past summer and was able to walk away with 2nd place.
I dont remember the velocity i am getting but with H4831SC in my old rem brass and new hornady brass i am producing sub 1/4 moa.

YOU MADE THE RITE CHOICE THAT 6MM REM WILL STAND IT GROUND AND SHINE DOING IT LOVE MINE I HAVE A 1982 700 VARMINT IN 6MM WOULD TAKE 2 OF THE OTHER CALIBERS FOR IT!!!!!!
 
I am also a fan of the good old 6mm, .243 is OK but the 6mm does better velocity wise AND barrel life wise. I own a .243 at this time and it really shoots well but I don't shoot it much because I know that cartirage is a little hard on barrels.
 
Im a fan of the 6mm also and the 243 and the 6br,etc etc.Had very accurate 6mm rem in a 788 which my brother in law has still got!Always wanted to make me a 6mm ai on a savage platform because of the action length maybe someday.The 6mm in a regular short action 700 is just about to long thats the only drawback I had with the cartridge.The 6mm if pushed hard is a great performer but I was always afraid to push it hard in the ole 788 lol.
 
I like that you went with the traditional cartridge. Unless you're a benchrest shooter looking to set records, there is nothing the newer 6mm cartridges can do that the original 6mm Rem and 243win can't. Original barrel twist is the only difference, which a new barrel remedies anyways.

It's awesome your daughters are going to the range with you !
