Can You Identify this Gun ?

This Rifle has been left to me from my Father, his wife says it's a 223 but that's all she can say about it. It may be weeks or better before I get it as she's got a lot on her plate. I just got back last week from a 2 week stay with him and his wife where I helped as much as I could and was able to spend some quality time with him, a little emotional but he wanted me to get back to my wife and kids.
Enough of that I'll attach a pic if I can, I'm sure some in this crowd will know this one and thanks ahead for the help. I reload 223 it's one of my favorites.

Thanks guys. Doc you mention the use of a light weight bullet, what reason ? The barrel? I can look this up myself of course but
I like opinions from multiple sources especially those of experience. I understand this rifle has never been shot.

IIRC correctly short bbl and slow twist may keep you away from really enjoying the heavy bullets. try 55gr nosler varmageddons to start with then don't ever talk about them again...like fight club, don't talk about it.:) the chamber on the ones I have encountered have all been a little loose or sloppy like a nato chamber. is it a bench gun? no...is it a fun time? hell yes! please enjoy.

If I remember right the Mini-14 had a 1 in 14 twist barrel. This is good up to 55 grain bullets. It was the normal, typical twist rate for the 223 back when that rifle was made.

Barrel Twist & op rod/barrel harmonics limit the Ruger Mini 14's accuracy potential.
Push 50,52,53 grainers as if it owes you money!

1.5"-2" groups @ 100yds is typical.

Agree. I've never seen one that shoots any better than this.

Every Ruger Mini 14, that I have ever seen was clearly marked with manufacturers name, model # and caliber. If it was a later model it had the information for obtaining the instruction manual roll stamped on the barrel. (We referred to the info as, "The surgeon generals warning) We always joked that if you got tired of shooting a Ruger you could always spend some time reading it.

Thanks Eddie I was aware of the stamp but with with only the picture I wasn't even sure it was the mini 14 most I'd seen at the range were more tactical with pistol grip ect... and this will be my
first Ruger or Tactical Rifle for that matter. Like you said though I've been reading up in the interweb and TouTubing all I can get on it, it does look like a fun gun!
