A customer shot this bull in Idaho. Measured 365 with a broken tine, would have been 390. 690 yds with a 6.5x47L, 140 hunting vld at 2830fps. First shot humped up the bull and caused a major leak, heart or liver shot. A quick second shot dropped it. It never did take a step. Impressive performance from the little case.FullSizeR.jpg

I have always said a nice 6.5 is all you need. Great bull and great shooting.

Alex, thanks for sharing. I love my 6.5X47L shot this nice antelope in S.D. at 545yds. Never took another step. 690yds on a big bull, that's really impressive. Me thinks his smith is pretty good ;)

Thanks, I cant take any credit though. I wouldnt recommend that round as an elk rifle, but just about any bullet in the vitals is going to work. If conditions were bad and that bullet ended up in a shoulder blade, who knows what would have happened. But if a guy knows his limitations and makes a shot hes sure of.... I know of an elk that was dropped in its tracks with a 60 grain sierra varminter bullet. That was unethical in my opinion, but it didnt hit bone and got into the vitals and it worked, that time.

2830 fps is very impressive with a 140 from the 47L. I wouldn't make it regular practice to hunt elk with that round either. Little light for some angles. I like the big stuff that can get to a bulls vitals from almost any angle.

As for the bullet he used...With this years hunting season talley included, I've now killed over 20 big game animals with the Berger 140gr Hunting VLDs using a 6.5 Rem Mag at all different ranges. Best 6.5 hunting bullet out there. Will never use anything else.

Awesome Bull and awesome accomplishment. Congrats.

Nice pic & back ground story. If I were that young fella' I'd be wearing that smile for at least a Month. Seems the young man had the "mentals" to make that happen. Outstanding !!

I agree, but who says powerful cartridges aren't accurate?

Power AND accuracy is a better equation
Over rated. Magnums aren't necessary on 99% of game in North America. Optional yes, mandatory definitely not. Accuracy is tho. That is what I believe is being stated here. Let's not take away from this gentleman's very well deserved trophy and accomplishment. He made the shot counts with the proper weapon.
