Primers

roflmao!!---what about the medium ones??????

I save the medium ones in an empty Tabasco bottle. It takes a long time to get a batch worked up.

I believe dkhunt when he says it matters in a heavy gun at 1000. I can see that, and he ought to know.

Not sure I would see the difference, or be able to document the difference, in F Class, shooting for score off a bipod. That said, I do seat them with a K & M primer seater with a dial indicator on it, so I am certainly not casting stones at anyone who does anything meticulous during their loading process. It's familiar.

I believe in F Class shooting before you shoot for score, you must shoot for groups first. That 1000yd X ring is only 5", wouldn't be nice to know your gun can shoot 3 to 4" groups at that range (conditions allowing such) before you go into a match ? I'm all for smaller groups, and if weighing primers works, I will do it, but if it just a Dark Science, I have my reservations.

ha ha ha!!!

When is the arrival date for the new "sinclair stick powder classifier" ????????
I heard it sorts by kernel length AND diameter!!

That would be a useless tool. Without also measuring the consistency of the interior perforations through the sticks, the length and diameter measures are of little value. I'm working on a tool that stands the powder sticks on end and shines a light through them to measure the optical transmisivity, which can be correlated to the interior surface area of the perforations.

dang, you got me there, that would be more scientifically relevant

Seriously,

You should weight your primers into .02 grain groups. Then take 100 fired primers and ultrasonically clean out all of the residue. Weigh all of the cups and anvils separately.

Now use a little math to determine the likely variation of a cup anvil combination.

SQRT((anvil weight ES)^2+(cup weight ES)^2).

Now, just break your primers up into appropriate groups.

Or, you could do your load developing in .02 grain powder increments and .001" seating depths

Or you can just shoot some heavy ones against some light ones. if the lab radar says there's 15 fps difference between them, then you decide if it matters to you?

...or you decide whether two samples of five is actually statistically valid to be basing that kind of decision off of ;)

If it works for you (apparently it does) go for it. I've gotten burned more than a few times by making decisions off of small samples. Others seem to do it regularly with impunity. Go figure.

I only do it for match ammo, and that's not as many as you would need.

Therein lies the problem for me, with a lot of BR processes... they don't scale very well. I don't dispute the value in absolute terms, but the return on investment vs. paying better attention to the conditions... is pretty slim.

Well I'm not sure if you've all read the article in the American Shooters Scientific regarding hydraulic sorting of primers and as well powder.
In summary ,and to save you the hours of reading boring data compilations, take all your primers and
drop into a pan of distilled ,demineralized water. Those primers that float indicate air inclusions within the priming compound and should be collected and discarded. Those that sank, remove from tank and allow to dry before use.
The same process is used to sort powder.Any kernels floating should be removed and discarded.
If in doubt you can Google the article in the American Shooter Scientific. Just type in A.S.S. and hit enter....
Sorry I just couldn't help myself.....
BUT if you TRULY believe it make you shoot better , then ..IT DOES.
I GooGooed ASS all I got was stinky when wet

Here's the good news. last time I attempted to test this, it took a few hundred to even find 5 of each that were .100 apart. this was cci 400's, results might vary for something else.

Tom

I look at weighing primers like worrying about the Coriolis Effect at the distances we shoot at - does it exist? Yes. Is it significant enough to worry about when you have 5 bajillion other factors that have a far more gross effect on the impact of your bullet on paper? No way. Almost all of the shooters (and I'll include myself) get wrapped up in trying to solve .000Nth degree factors via the loading process that could easily be fixed with a 1/8 MOA better wind call than you are making now. :)

EDIT: I'm mostly directing this at F-Class shooters (shooting for score, where you are more likely to have to make a discrete wind call, shot to shot) since I've never shot BR. BR is a different game with different dimensions, especially short range BR.

About ready to dump my primer can from the press and it occurred to me that maybe once fired primers can bring in a next to new price at gun shows. Maybe sell by the pound??
