Primers

After weighing the primers, the next suggestion is test orienting them all the same way; like the long-range cast bullet shooters align the casting line a certain way. Maybe having one side up makes a difference. Ya' never know.

I once shot a .84" group at 600yds, if I weighed primers would it be better????
A novice shooter weighed his primers, he did not win the match. ??????

Speaking of primers. Has anyone ever tried Berdan primers for match shooting? I know an old shooter who has a case of Radway Green 7.62. He used to build match ammo by pulling the bullets, dumping out the power, refilling the case and topping it off with a Sierra match bullet. The theory was that the Berdan primers were more consistent than Boxer primers. I have some RWS Berdan primers I bought a long time ago to try to reload some strange foreign cartridges. It turned out to be easier to reform the brass from other cartridges than to reload the Berdan primers.

I wouldn't want to use Radway Green brass for serious match use, even if it had 24c gold-plated primers and multiple flash-holes. (The 4-lug Swing action that has morphed into today's RPA was developed to outperform twin-lug designs when trying to cope with RG and similar rounds whose case-heads weren't necessarily square to the round/bore axis!)

There was an American sling shooters of years gone by - can't remember his name - who imported primed Austrian Hirtenberger Berdan cases which reputedly performed very well.

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in awhile. At 600 I don't think it makes much difference. In an 80 pound heavy gun that averages 4 to 5 inches at 1000 yards on a good day, the weighed primers made a difference. In BR it does make a difference. You guys can poke and make all the fun you want. If you come shoot BR I like you guys that don't weigh primers. It makes life easier. Matt

Well I'm not sure if you've all read the article in the American Shooters Scientific regarding hydraulic sorting of primers and as well powder.
In summary ,and to save you the hours of reading boring data compilations, take all your primers and
drop into a pan of distilled ,demineralized water. Those primers that float indicate air inclusions within the priming compound and should be collected and discarded. Those that sank, remove from tank and allow to dry before use.
The same process is used to sort powder.Any kernels floating should be removed and discarded.
If in doubt you can Google the article in the American Shooter Scientific. Just type in A.S.S. and hit enter....
Sorry I just couldn't help myself.....
BUT if you TRULY believe it make you shoot better , then ..IT DOES.

Well...I searched google images for A.S.S. so I could see a photocopy of the document. Just as it was pulling up results my wife walked into the room.....

On a happier note I found out first hand that the ER wait times at my local hospital are very short if you are bleeding out of an ear:eek:.

And see where that got you...just two x's:D

Actually, I think it might be 4Xs: Dos = two, and XX, so twice XX = 4X. Alternatively, it might be (2)(X squared). Not sure how that would work out on the scorecard :).

In response to the OP, I would really like to see some data where someone had weighed primers and loaded up otherwise identical sets rounds using primers from either of the two extremes (lightest and heaviest), then determined average MV using each set. If you can't detect the difference with the chronograph, it becomes pretty hard to make any argument that what you saw on the target was due to weight sorting the primers. Not saying that is the case, just curious whether anyone has any actual data on the effect of weight sorting primers.

As others have stated I think it's relative to your shooting venue but for me and 1000 yard benchrest yes I sort primers for match ammo. I wish I didn't feel it was needed but my fellow competitors at my home range deep creek missoula mt will capitalize on all steps left out. Tuff crowd requires nothing left to chance.

I never weighted a primer, but I'm just guessing that an anvil and cup all weight the same, since they are punched product, so the difference in weight would be in the charge. My thoughts are, in a 6br small primer pocket the hole would act as a ignition resistor orfice of sorts, and reduce the primer flame to the point that a primer of less weight would not make such a difference. I would like to hear from the BR primer sorters, of any proof, or their thoughts of why this weighing procedure is definitely related to smaller groups. I'm not a disbeliever, just what some solid evidence.
