Elk @ 600 yrds

The primary consideration is not finding a rifle, scope, and ammo that will do the job; that is easy to do for a reasonable price. One must put in the trigger time in a stable position (prone for me) to become proficient. Upon hunting the wind must be within your comfort zone. My old Tikka 300WM and Nikon rig is more like 10lb, but lighter options are available. Shooting prone and no wind, dropped a cow elk at 550yd last year and going back in a few weeks. In the meanwhile I will practice 300yd weekly, and at least one long range session.

X2! My (nefarious) Brother-In-Law recently contacted me that he got a Savage 338 Lapua for long range hunting. Even if he was 100% healthy (helicoptor crash in 'Nam, self-medication, etc.) I would still mention his lack of skill cannot be made up by buying a bigger gun...

Just loaded some 378 WBY with 300 GR solid .and 235 Barns TSX . I think it's a little over gun go Florida deer . But is fine for hogs . Smile. Larry

If it was me I'd get closer.

However being in the business yes it's perfectly doable for a factory gun to shoot factory ammo and kill an elk or deer at 600 yards while staying under 8.5lbs.

Kimber Montana
280 Ackley
Leupold 4.5-14 CDS
Use Nosler trophy factory ammo

That's one of quite a few examples a guy could buy to do it. Elk are awful big.

But like I said, I would personally get much closer and enjoy the hunt. The market is certainly moving towards "long range hunting with lightweight rifles"

Spooky.

All the elk I have shot over the last few years have all been around 500-550 yards. 300 Win Mag rem 700 sendero...hand loads...little on the heavy side but whats a few extra pounds..For us guys on here that shoot long range..it feels pretty natural...If I can hit prarie dogs at 600..an elk looks like truck..

I hear you. After shooting groundhogs all summer and deer season gets here, a 100 yds. is a flaming chip shot. Maybe I should take up spear hunting? :D

I think there are some well trained, disciplined hunters who can make 600 yard kills on Elk under good conditions. But to paraphrase P.O. Ackley," most 600 yard shots are made with typewriters". Barlow
And with video editing software and Photo Shop.

As long as the guy gets in plenty of practice shooting offhand at 600 yards, he'll probably be OK. Practicing from a bench won't cut it. He can hang a watermelon in a net from a tree limb at 600 yards, and find out just how capable he is at that distance. That's about the size of the vital area on an elk.

On those kind of hunts typically my pack is set up for a front and rear rest so to speak. It serves as both. My gun is rock solid in this cradle. I also have a bipod or stoney point tall tripod with the rear stock support. Many options when I'm on a hunt. Not necessarily will I have them in the field all the time but will take what's necessary for that hunt. I've rarely had to shoot off hand, especially beyond 300 yards. Sometimes I suppose it could be what's required but trying to eliminate it helps. Yes an elks vitals are quite sizeable.

I have a cocker spaniel bigger than these florida deer.
Thought Florida had fairly average size whitetails and the Key deer were the Hamster size deer ? I know the Key deer are a smaller sub species but didn't think the white tailed deer were any smaller than the Texas white tailed deer.

When I lived in Florida, the average buck weighed 115-125 pounds.

That's about what I figured. Don't the key deer weigh alot less ?
I believe they are a bit smaller than the "grey ghost" in Arizona. The male Coues (grey ghost) deer in Arizona weigh roughly 100 pounds. The one I harvested tipped the scale at 96 pounds.
