28 Nolser 195 Berger Powder

What powder is everyone using with this combo? What kind of results are you getting? From what I have seen, most are using RE33. I was curious if anyone was using Retumbo and if their results were on par with those using RE33 in terms of velocity and accuracy. I intend to have a 28 built within the next 18 months or so and am just trying to get some info.

The one I built for my friend has a 1-9 twist brux and he is using retumbo with 180gr hybrid, I'm not 100% sure on his seating depth now but touching lands is around 3.62-3.63ish so it still feeds in a rem mag box. I think he is getting around 3140fps ill have to double check with him.

Every one I have built to date has had a 26" barrel. Typical loads rangee 85 grains of 33 or 80 grains retumbo. The 195 seated .015" off the lands with an oal length or about 3.765 to fit in a wyatt's box with an internal or 3.825" These loads run about 3050 fps. There is another node higher, but this one just shoots so nice without pushing it.

RL33 and Retumbo work well. Velocties around 3150 to 3200fps with the 195. I had good luck in the 86-88 grain range but work up slowly. I settled on 86.5 with RL33 and it has been consistent and very, very accurate.

My test load has been 88.6 gr of reloader 33 for the roughly 70 28noslers i have built since last fall. Once the barrel breaks in/speeds up you will need to back it down a few grains. Accuracy has been in the .2s or better in every one Ive built. A handful of customers have sent me groups in the .0s. My reamer is very similar to Alex wheelers. very long throat setup specifically for the 195 berger. considering the ballistics, accuracy and lack of recoil in the 28 nosler I think it is an unbeatable combo for a lighter weight long range hunting rifle. I have no problems spotting my hits with a sub 10lb gun with optics with my slabbed mini magnum "muscle" brake installed.

How much would the load need to be backed off? About when would it need to be backed off?

RL33 gives better velocity but Retumbo also does well.

How much and when depends on the barrel. I have primarily used Brux barrels and they speed up around the 70 round mark and speed up around 70 fps. This requires about a 2 gr drop in powder to get to previous velocity. I was talking to a customer last week and his sped up from 3143 to 3210 fps with a 195. He said it still shot lights out but was hard on brass. He backed it down 2 grains and shot a 3 shot group at 600 yards that had maybe a 1/4" of vertical tops.

I'm running the 195's touching the lands with 78-gr of Retumbo. 3030-fps with single digit ES and SD's. Funny thing, using Fed 210M primers give the same result as CCI Magnum primers.

One thing I notice, these 195's copper foul the barrel badly with only 50-rounds down the tube.

I noticed the fouling too. I will probably clean every shooting session now just so it doesn't get missed. BTW, my RUM rifles did the same. I guess performance has a price.

I agree performance comes with a price. With reloader 33 I tell guys to clean it every 30-40 rounds tops. It carbon fouls very badly.

I would expect guys to clean every 20-30 on any hunting rifle. The only reason to ever go more is if your sport requires it. A top quality barrel will shoot better without built up fouling. You will never see a Benchrest competitor leave fouling in the bore.
