I'm in south central Ky and I think it's a great area for a shooter and or outdoorsman.....and I'm a Realtor! One of the best rimfire ranges in the country is Kettlefoot, near Bristol. I think it's rimfire only, though. What types of shooting are you most interested in and how far are you willing to drive. We have UBR matches at Gallatin, Tn. Somerset Ky and Jonesville, Va also have UBR ranges.
It is centerfire too.. out to 300 yards sirOne of the best rimfire ranges in the country is Kettlefoot, near Bristol. I think it's rimfire only, though. I didn't know that. Thank you! I've not heard of them holding any cf matches. Wonder why that is? It's a first class rf range. It is centerfire too.. out to 300 yards sir
Holy mother of Varget, you didn't find ORSA!? Undoubtedly one of the best shooting facilities in the US, and only $120/yr. Over 900 acres, 1000 yard competition range (with 900/800/600/300/200 yard lines), Action shooting range, 200 yard bench rest range with covered benches, an indoor range and a Small bore and pistol competition range, oh, and 3 skeet/trap ranges.Still trying to decide where to retire. Are there any decent ranges between Knoxville and Bristol? Did a Where To Shoot search and didn't come up with much.
Then Kettlefoot would be your choice.. let me know if your in the Upper East Tn area.. i will take you there and show you around..I don't compete (anymore). Used to do Service Rifle, but not anymore. Now I'm just a varmint guy. I don't know where I'm going to end up but was hoping for a close 300yd range for casual shooting, load development, etc. Hoping I wouldn't have to drive a couple of hours to accomplish that. Guess I'm spoiled, most of the time I've usually been within 1/2 hr or less of a 300 yd (or more) range. Currently I'm 12 miles from a 300 yd range I belong to.
They have had a nice 300 yard range for a while now.. i think that the main thing is that they haven't had anyone to volunteer to run matches.. it is a really nice range..I didn't know that. Thank you! I've not heard of them holding any cf matches. Wonder why that is? It's a first class rf range.
I will be going out there tomorrow.. while i am there.. i will try to find out the scuttlebuttA friend of mine I shoot centerfire short range 100-200 yards talks about them having registered center fires BR matches years ago
unaka in johnson city goes to 200 yds only. they have sanctioned benchrest competition and always have a range officer present...very safe. cherokee rod and gun club(kingsport) has 2 ranges. one goes to 300 yds. no range officer. varmint hunting in ne tn/sw va is very available as there are very few true varmint hunters anymore and the farmers beg varmint hunters to reduce their ghog population. coyotes are everywhere but few hunters. many farms with 300+ yard fields and most farmers don't mind you doing load development. there are also several retail stores stocked with all shooting/reloading supplies(wideners in johnson city, cabelsas on I-81 near bristol).I don't compete (anymore). Good luck on your relocation Itchytf...In addition myself a possible candidate for relocation I'd like to say that I think that a forum here on "Acc. Shooter." dealing with this exact issue might be a great benefit for all of us who are looking for a friendly active shooting community to relocate to. Where we can enjoy our twilight years with others punching holes in paper. For me anyway the thought of relocating because of moderate seasons or State friendly (Republican) reasons I pondered now and then but the information has been hard to find therefore hopes of making a good move are basically just relegated to a pipe dream.Still trying to decide where to retire.
