Action choice

I am getting ready to buy parts for a PRS style match gun to build a 6mm Dasher. I am getting a custom action. However, I am having a hard choice on picking one. A guy couple guys at our matches are shooting dashers. I already have a 6.5 Lapua, but I want something with a little less recoil and not so expensive to shoot. Plus it saves my 6.5. I also want to get my kids into shooting, so this will be a 15lb Dasher with a removable break.

I also want it to be a switch barrel gun, such as Big Horn action, Mausingfield, ect. I love the idea of switching to a 223 for practice. I want an action that is very smooth. I know that they are not Bats or Kelbley. Or I could order a trued Rem 700 action from PTG and make it a Rem-Age set up. If anyone has any experience with Big Horn actions, or has any other ideas, please discuss them. Thanks for your input.

Looked at the Haverkamp actions? The ones I've checked out are QUITE nice, and Tom is a really great fellow. Just a few hours drive from you. Do a search on them and I think you'll find them well respected. JME. WD

Did somebody start a "Josh" thread? Small hijack: I've read quite a few good reviews about PV Arms, Paul. Is he that good? I'm only a half hour's drive from Exton. It would be very convenient for me to use him on some projects. JoshB

He is very good IMHO. There is a thread on the Hide about his work. Some of his customers have sent in some pics of the groups they have shot from bipod and bag laying in the dirt.. Pretty amazing. Check it out in the "bolt action section".

This is what you want to do. Its made to shoot a dasher or br. One thought, why not just go 6mmbr and use it for training and short range competitions. No fireforming, it burns 3 more grains of powder than a 223, a heck of allot more accurate and easier to load for, 75 amaxes and 105 amaxes are basically the same price, and ACCURATE barrel life is the same. 105's have a higher bc and would be better to use in short range competitions (inside 800 yards) than a 223 as well. I have a 6.5x47 as well and want to build a 6br for the purposes I just described. You could do a switch barrel with your 6.5x47 and wouldn't need another bolt. Primal rights makes a mag adapter for the shorter cartridges now.

Pierce is very smooth and well machined. I bought a Pierce on the recommendation of one of the top members/shooters here that said they are as smooth as Bats. I do not own a Bat to compare to myself but I am very happy with the Pierce.
 
It is not problem making a switch bbl rig with a REM 700 without the nut. Simply have the smith pin your recoil lug and you can switch from BBL to BBL to BBL.....

First I love my dasher. a 223 will need a small bolt face. My dasher is on a BAT action, I also own a 6 PPC/6 Br on a Borden Rim Rock action that is very smooth and much preferred over the Bat. I do have a 223 built on a 700 with an 8 twist and it is fun to shoot to 600 yrds. My Borden is for 100 and 200 BR. the Dasher is for F-Class 600 yds. I have action wrenches and barrel vice so changing barrels is easy for me.
 
Give Jim Borden a call fro Borden Custom Action. They are some of the finest actions I have ever used and smooth as glass.
