caliber choice

been away from shooting for 10-12 yrs or so, retired now and want to do some target shooting at local ranges, not getting back into competition, i want something easy on the barrel and accurate, i presently have a a few 223's a 6br and a 6.5x284, i want to get something in a savage prefit barrel, calibers i was thinking are the 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5x47 or the 5.5x55 sweedish muaser, are any of these any easier on the throat than the 6br, will not be shooting more than 300yds,

The 6.5 Creedmoor is very easy on the throat but i can't compare it to the 6BR as I do not have one. The 6.5X55 is pretty easy but not much available factory loads if that is desirable. The 6.5 X 47 is typically loaded for higher pressure than the Creed and would likely not be as kind on the throat as the Creed. An big advantage of the Creed is the availability of high quality factory loads and it is an easy cartridge to dial in if rolling your own. Upside to the 6.5 X 47 is that you can get factory Lapua brass without reforming from another caliber although very good Norma and Nosler brass is available for the Creed.

Stick with a 6BR or wait until the new 6 Dasher brass hits the market and build one of those...

+1. Been down that road myself, being retired for more than 10 yrs. It also depends on the range distance available but the 6.5 Creedmoor would add a nice touch. I only shoot 100-200 anymore, mostly because of the range I have available, plus my eye sight isn't what it once was. But having a 6br and a 6.5, for me at least, is fun time galore. A Dasher would add to the fun for sure. I tried the 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser thing and just didn't have all that much success with it. So that rifle is now a 6.5BR.

You should consider a .260 Remington. Same balistics as the 6.55x55 but cheaper and more plentiful brass. More case capacity than the Creedmoor or 6.5x47. Longer barrel life then your other choices.

I'm now gathering my components. Mine will be Ackley Improved for better brass life. I'm planning on using it as an F-Open rifle.

You would be approaching the edge of performance at 300 yds. with the 6 ppc. although I have seen some do well to 400 yds. on good days .

A .260 factory rifle that competes regularly near me just hammers and is right there in scoring with the custom class's , I mean only a couple points down out to 500 yds. Yes the guy can shoot it but it has to shoot too.

^^^^^^I was looking for something new. I also have a couple 6br guns and most of the other "military" and hunting cartridges. I have a couple 30brs in the works. Barrel life is fantastic and loading supposedly simple to tune. I have been shooting more 223 after I got an 8 twist barrel. I do like the lite recoil. It really stretches a pound of powder, too.

I would keep at the 6BR or for even better barrel longevity, try 223 with a twist favoring heavy bullets that are good for out to 1000yd.

6.5 Grendel.....Lapua brass and some good factory ammo. 300yds.....not a bad choice. 300 Blackout....Optimum barrel length 9.5".....Great out to 300 and a real joy sub sonic. Just a few off the path options for around here.......Rick

6br would be my first choice. Easy on barrels, good selection of bullets, dosn't use much powder. Very accurate with a wide range of bullet weights.

Stay with the 6MM BR. Out to 600 yards there is nothing better. If you want 100-300 yards go with the 6PPC. However, for what you want to accomplish you will not see a real advantage staying with the 6MM BR. If you are going to buy a new barrel I would recommend one in 1:12 twist to shoot 80gr FB or BT bullets. Find a large supply of H4895 or Varget and some good bullets and stick with them. For primers I know everyone wants Fed 205M but don't be afraid to use the regular Fed 205. If you want to save a few bucks (specially since the 205Ms are not readily available) go with the Winchester SR primers. They work very well. I have shot bugholes with all 3 in my 6PPCs.
