Green mountain barrels

Found a great deal on a green mountain chambered barrel. Low round count guy says shoots great(.5) and fluted. 150 RDS thru it. Asking 225.00. Any thoughts on quality or opinions on this item.

I've had 4 of them but only shot 3 for accuracy. 1 is a 6.5-300wm that shoots in the .3's when I do, one in 300wm does about .6-.7", and the other was a 6.5-284 and it struggled to shoot 1.5". The 4th one, a 338 Lapua, and the 300wm barrel I use to test muzzle brakes so I don't really care how they shoot but I shot the 300wm barrel out of curiosity. The main reason I got them is they were cheap. I would probably buy a Wilson over a Green Mountain if I wanted a cheaper barrel.

Personally, when I want something to shoot I buy the best (usually Bartlein, Brux, or Krieger for me). I have a hard time buying less knowing I'm risking the outcome and I do my own gunsmithing so that part is free for me. I would probably buy a Wilson over a Green Mountain if I wanted a cheaper barrel.

Well at the price he's asking it's a roll of the dice but not a big hit to take if it doesn't shoot spectacular. I wouldn't buy it new but chambered and low round count at that price I'm curious. I don't expect it to be a bartlein or broughton barrel, so I won't get my hopes up too much. Thanks for your input.

I have been using some GM barrels to practice chambering on since they are cheap. I haven't shot any so can't report on that but many people are happy with them. From what I can see some HP shooters use them but no serious benchrester would. I'd encourage you to check out their website and see what you can buy a new one for. Like Idaho says I will be buying Kreigers or bartleins soon for accuracy work. Wilsons minimum order I think is 100 and I don't know who resells them.

Green mountain are great rimfire barrels but stay away from their centerfires as they are iffy to say the least. I have barreled a few for customers with mediocre results. You should be able to find a premium barrel in good used condition for that price if you shop a little.

Barrels are like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get.

Point to be made. I have shot most all barrels that are made at some time in the last 15 years.

I have factory Savage CM barrels that are just as accurate as my Krieger's. In fact, one of the best F/TR 308 scores I have ever shot was with a Savage Factory 308 CM Varmint Barrel. The rifle: FCP 308 with the McMillian Stock. The only thing I have done to this rifle is put good optics on it, installed a Rifle Basix SAV-2 Trigger, Bedded the action, and installed a muzzle break.

It remains one of my most accurate rifles. I currently have rifles with Bartlein, Krieger, McGowan, CBI, and X-Caliber barrels. I have had two barrels over the years that would not shoot. The rest were fine. You might as well say it's the luck of the draw.

Green Mountain Barrels, well some have shot just as good as my high end barrels, FYI.

JMO, Dennis

PS: I have a factory Savage VLP 22-250 with a Stainless Fluted barrel on it. I did the same work to it as I did on my FCP 308. I can email you a picture of my target where I shot a 5 round group at 100 yards, it's almost looks like one hole, but measured out at .147
I can also send you pictures of my FCP targets, a Quarter will cover the holes (100 yards). I will probably sell my 22-250! I have no practical use for it, and my preference is shooting one of my 6mm's, again my preference.

For aboutthe same cost you can get new one from apache or even cheaper at bison> Offer about one and a quarter and see what happens>

I'm working with a 6mm 9 twist GM at the moment. I wanted to see what would be possible from an 18 inch 6 Creedmoor, but didn't want to experiment with a 300+ dollar blank.

Tool marks in the bore are no worse than I've seen in Douglas and the non-lapped Shilen barrels I've scoped. I haven't slugged it, but the rifling does appear to be a bit shallower than most of my other barrels. It is taking more H4350 than I had originally thought to find max, but it is showing promise. Comfortable saying it will be a solid 1/2 moa barrel when load work is done.

Bear in mind that my experience with a single barrel doesn't mean much.

Always good to see more info on GM barrels. I have one in 22br ready to try. To the OP Since this barrel is allready chambered do you think it would headspace ok on your gun? Were you thinking you could just thread it on your rifle and go? That may or may not work. If you dont do that sort of work yourself you would have to have a gunsmith headspace it for you.

I would not do it myself. I wouldn't buy the go,no go gauges for this job if I purchased the barrel. A gunsmith would do this. Its for a 700 action.
