another crazy question

I have a Bartlien 4 groove 8 twist 6BR bbl with about 600 rounds set up for 105s,,since I have other bbls to shoot 105s in BRDX and 243,,would an 8 twist zero freebore 6BR shoot 68-80 gr bullets worth a crap,,I would like to get started with another short range rifle and I have everything but a bbl,,should I wait untill I can afford a new 12-14 twist bbl or could this 8 possibly shoot the light bullets with a zero freebore chamber job??

I would think it should stand a chance, as long as the bullet jacket is up to it....IE, not too much velocity...

I`ve been wrong before though....

P.S.....I`ve never done it.....

big,,,yes,,,I shoot little bullets in my 6mmBR's and Dashers with 8 twist bbl,,,and they shoot great ,,,as Phil said above ,,some bullets will take the high rpm's and some will not,,,stay with "boutique" custom "B"enchrest bullets and you will be fine,,,Roger
PS,,,dont load down to make the bullets stay together,,,the powder does not burn properly at reduced pressure and accuracy goes away,,,if your bullets are failing ,,get better bullets,,,keep the pressure up and the accuracy will be there,,,

thanx I know some guys shoot the factory Savage 8 twist 6BR with the Berger Column bullets at our UBR matches so I figured it might work even better with a zero freebore .268 neck chamber,,if it wont shoot up to match accuracy it would make a killer varmint rifle with the 75-87 VMax

at least I will get some use out of it as I doubt ever having anything besides a 6PPC bbl on the Farley action it came on,,

now I just need to weigh my stuff and see if I can get it under 13.5 with the Rem action for Modified or if it will be over 13.5 in UL I will use my Stiller Tac 30 action,,

I screwed the 6BR on the Farley while I had the 12 twist PPC off getting ready to put 13.5 twist PPC on,,I tried the 68 JDS BT and Varget and everything between 33.8 and 34.2 kept the same POI and are under .250 easy,,I might try and fine tune a load at about 34 grs and might even shoot it next match,,IDK if I will have time to get brass and load ready for new PPC bbl by then anyway,,

When I started out I went with a Shilen DGV and 8-twist ratchet rifled barrel (4 grooves). The first 200 rounds using Hornady 87gn Vmax the gun would not shoot! Nothing I tried could guarantee to predictably be on the paper at 100 yards! I switched over to Berger 80gn Varmints and it started shooting bug holes! I tried all kinds of powder (Varget, Benchmark, H322, XBR, and some others I don't remember) and the gun didn't seem to care! The only thing that really brought out the accuracy was loading all rounds "long" so that they were seated by the lands on closing the bolt. I had to do this because there was about 10-15 thousandths difference in bullet BTO measurements. I have no idea what the freebore is/was (I retired the barrel at 2000 rounds even tho it was still shooting) but it worked. YMMV

You don't need zero FB to shoot lights decent. In fact you get more room for powder. Try before you buy another.

My experiences with a 6mmbr 8 twist (.45 freebore) has shown that it'll shoot 65-68 gr bullets very nicely regardless of the make, though Barts out shot the Bergers. But when I moved up to 80gr+, I noted a slight falloff in grouping.

Twist, velocity and jacket is what matters in going with that spread of bullet weight, as referenced in this thread elsewhere
