factory benchrest rifle recomendations

Another +1 for Bob White at The Shooter's Corner". Always a rack full of used Bench Rest rifles and plenty of new and used things to go with them. He is away at the Nations right now, but is expected back on the 15th. Best to E-mail (usually answered in detail by his wife) or call as the inventory seems to change quicker than the lists on the web site.

You "altered" it the moment you sent the first round down the tube!! ;) ;) Get a custom chrome molly tube , have it blued, and shoot small!! No one will be the wiser!!

Haha....Get your wedding ring altered and see what your wife says. Seriously, like I said its impossible to find decent brass for any more, and time for a new shooter. I did get a kick out of your post though.

Nothing says that you have to rebarrel it in 6mm Remington. You could use any cartridge with the standard .473 bolt face...including 6 BR.

But, if you want a Benchrest rifle, forget about a factory rifle. Get a used custom or semi custom. Lots of them out there. There are a couple of good options in the classifieds on here now.

Check Walmart I can't believe I said it .

Savage. Target action, easy barrel swap and accurate. Just the gun for a budget shooter. I have some customs and I'm thinking about getting one. Wishing I had gotten one instead of some other guns I bought. Good luck.
I agree. If the OP is trying to shoot short range BR with a sub $1000 rifle, he is not planning on winning a National event, that's for sure. But he can certainly do well (or at least have fun) in local matches.

One recipe would be a Savage Target action for about $550, a Shilen Match barrel $339, and a Boyd's stock for $119. That puts the base price at $1008, plus a few bucks for bedding compound, etc. Buying a used Savage 12 action or converting some other flavor of Savage action would save a few bucks.

Finding a good deal on a "shot out" but otherwise suitable rifle is tough because people selling such a rifle won't admit it's "shot out" because it still hits a paper plate at 100 yards. Those who know about such things, would most likely put on a new barrel and keep using it.

I bought my used rifle for $1,400 with two good barrels. It's still my best shooting rifle. I sold one the other day with two good barrels and a case for $1,200. Deals are out there if one is patient.

In this particular case, the OP has a rifle with a shot out barrel. The solution is to get it back into action with a fresh barrel...in 6 BR, if that's his cartridge of choice...maybe get it pillar bedded and get back to shooting.

The OP didn't seem to understand that his rifle could be rebarreled for a different cartridge as long as the bolt face and action length worked. So, he needs to work with someone that won't try to take advantage of his inexperience.

I have a nice 6br Savage PTA, Krieger barrel, PRT Lowboy just sitting. I have not shot it since I bought it off of here. Hint, hint.... Will be willing to part with..... just need to get my money back.

You can look at a new barrel a different way.

If you rebarrel it, you can still use the rifle your wife bought you 43 years ago. If you buy a new rifle, the rifle your wife bought you will sit unused in the safe.

Sorry guys, I didn't give enough details in the beginning. My 6mm Rem is a 1970 700 Bdl w/ sporter barrel. I have recently gotten back into the sport, after being away 40 years. Bench rest really appeals to me, so I'm new to all this and have a lot to learn. I have been a reloader for many years, and enjoy that very much. Just trying to get back up to date with all the new to me, calibers and cartridge data. I did pm you Don.Thanks for your patience with me.

Hi all, I shot the barrel out of my 6mm Rem, and want to replace with a new factory rifle. I'm trying to stay in $1000.00 price range if possible. I shoot benchrest 1-3 hundred yards.

There's no way you can buy a decent factory 6mmbr for $1000. Why not just rebarrel your present 6mm. Barrel cost-$340 and installation $125. That's half of $1000. Or did I miss something???

Cruzr, there is another savage option. Cabelas is selling a Savage/Cabelas special Savage FV12 for $419. For that you get a 26inch varmint profile barrel and the accutrigger. At that price it's a steal. It's like paying for an action and getting a whole rifle. The down side is the plastic stock and the limited caliber choices (308, 204, 223 & 22-250). If you were interested in making a little project out of it you could easily take the barrel off and sell it, get a nice after market barrel & stock and still be under your $1000 budget. Depending on your caliber choice you might also need to replace the bolt head but that's also an inexpensive/easy job.

I have taken everyone's advice into consideration, and decided to hold off until I have more funds available to buy a good used custom. I realize now that $1000.00 benchrest gun is not going to be possible. My 6mm Remington is still good enough for hunting purposes, so may gift it to my grandson. He is 13 now and my wife would love to see it go to him. I live in a rural area, and am a member of a 1-2 yard rifle range, so looking for the appropriate bench rest rifle. Thanks again for all your help, this is a great forum.

Can you shoot a factory rifle and win in a serious BR match? I don't think so, but I have been wrong often enough to hedge that bet.

Be advised that even among those with the very best equipment, there is only one winner anyway. Odds suggest that if winning is the only thing that can float your boat, you're going to have wet feet most of the time.

Consider goals with reasonable stages. A factory rifle will serve you well for several of those early stages. You can learn handloading fundamentals and advanced techniques before a factory rifle limits your overall performance. Shooting BR is different from..., just about any other discipline. Again, you can get pretty far along the main road before the factory rifle holds one back.

Here's my idea of a fairly good starter rifle for precision shooting. Try a Savage 11VT from Dick's. They can be had in (at least) .223 and .308, my preference is .223 for the distances you have in mind. Yes, it's not a 6mm, but it is the chambering Sierra chooses to use for accuracy testing all their .224" bullets. It has a 1:9" rifling twist, which is adequate, but not excessive for the HDY 75gr HPBT Match (not A-Max) bullet. I load PPU brass with Varget and CCI BR-4's. I have shot several years worth of FV250 against other rifles like the Savage BR 6mm, custom 6.5x47, and loads of others. They beat me (of course they do...), but I continue to learn and improve. This rifle will hold you back eventually, but even then it will teach you how to stretch your limits. Only when you plateau will that ultimate rifle be appropriate, and you won't have worn it to shreds before you can really do it justice.

The Savage rifles are considered by many to be reasonably easy to replace a shot-out barrel on.

BTW, great optics can't be beat, but pretty good ones can get you far enough to hold off with the megabucks before you go for that ultimate rifle. This is the scope I have on my 11VT. It's a highly adequate scope at an affordable price.

I own two of these scopes, and the other is on my custom Savage-based .260 Rem 1000yd F-Open rifle. My other mid-range rig is a Stag Model 6 Super Varminter AR, with a Weaver Classic V-24.

My rifle shoots handloads and the only mod beyond replacing the package rifle scope has been to lighten the adjustable trigger. BTW, I shoot off a bipod and rear bag. You can do better.
