PRIMER ANVILS

Other post got me thinking about primers. When the primer detonates wouldn't the anvil be blown against the flash hole? Any thoughts about what's happening here?

That's the reason why primer pocket needs to be uniform. Also that why primer seating is important . Both depth and resistance . It must have the same resistance . Larry

I should have looked at a fired primer before my post. Any how, I just looked at a fired primer with a magnifying glass. It looks like the force of going off doesn't change the shape of the anvil or position of the anvil. This means the flames goes between the anvil legs then into the flash hole. I assumed that since the priming compound is an explosive the anvil would be damaged.

Yesterday I looked at about 50 Rem 7 1/2 BR primers. Some of them have a dark substance or stain on the paper disc between the primer compound and the anvil. Some have a slight twist or wrinkle in the paper. Is this a defect?

Other have had the Same question before That makes it a great post . Larry

I would say at least 99 percent or better problems with miss or hang fires is seating or weak strike. I would take the bolt apart and clean and inspect it. Depending on action I would also replace the spring. Matt

Agreed! Mostly due to improper seating i.e. proud primers. Webster do you do a finger check after you seat? Brush your finger across the head. With this method, even very slight proud primers would be obvious.

I have a new spring and good indents on the cup. I will quit worrying about it. For now I will assume it's the primers. I put ten primers that looked funny as far a stains and dark particles on the paper foil. Put them in unloaded cases and popped them off. All fired. Nice indent.

Nice techy article on primer enery, miss fires and hang fires. It was done by researchers at the Air Force Academy. I posted this several years ago.

Concerning the reliability of primers -- here's an interesting little story that I just love to share.

A few years back, I bought a bag of 8mm Mauser brass at our local gunshow. Many of them were grungy, greasy, green,-- pretty nasty stuff. At home, I tossed them into a stainless pan, submerged them with water, and a few glugs of concentrated Simple Green; then boiled them and stirred for awhile. I usually do this with auto-dishwashing detergent, but used the green this time.

After a few minutes, I dumped them in a strainer, rinsed them well, and tossed them in the oven on a cookie sheet for an hour on 200.

When they were dry, I noticed that several of them were primed brass, and thought, HMMMMMM. Chambered one in my K-98, and BAM. They all worked, and were as robust as any new primer.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't treat and store your primers with care, but I don't worry about it as much as I used to. jd
