What do you consider the most important rule in gun safety?

I don't know............... Mom always said "Be careful. You'll shoot your eye out".

That rule has worked pretty well for me for over 60 years.

1.Vote Republican!;)
2. Never tell your wifey what you paid for them.
3. Keep'em locked up. Wifey may try to get one appraised.
4. Don't tell people you have a lot of guns.
5. Don't post pictures of your guns on Facebook or other public forums.(oops)

XBBR nailed it. "Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction!". Follow them all but follow that one religiously and you'll be good to go.

The first rule is only about muzzle discipline in the NRA curriculum. In the Cooper/Gunsite curriculum, the first rule is "treat all guns as if they were loaded at all times." (That rule is frequently bastardized down to "all guns are always loaded." That is not correct, for at least two reasons.)

Since there is more than one set of rules, there is, by definition, no standard set of rules. It varies with the range you're shooting at. Don't tell a range that their rules are wrong.

So for the most important rule, you have to decide which set of rules you want to discuss.

Since you were rude enough to bring politics into a non-political thread, now you get to read my opinion.

There is no chance I will vote for Trump, he's a racist, misogynistic, homophobic fascist. I am not a single issue voter, and Secretary Clinton conforms to what I believe far more than Trump does. Of course, Trump changes day to day, but if he did happen to align with my views perfectly, twenty minutes later he would have changed again.

Act as if you’ve smarts enough to not be locked up.
Whatever happened to displaying “common sense”…?

+1 on the Republican vote. Sorry not exactly what your looking for but without guns, you'll never have to worry about safety, except from the bad guys that WILL have them. Obviously muzzle direction safety. I'll go outside the box and say overall condition of your firearm. Make sure it's in shape to fire ammunition. Muzzle to recoil pad.

First rule... watch where you point a firearm - no matter what else happens, if the firearm is pointed in a safe direction, there can be no harm.
All the rest are secondary.

Absolutely correct. KEEP THE MUZZLE POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION. Following this ONE rule means everything else that happens if you do this, will merely be a somewhat interesting harmless story.

Mrs. Clinton never varies. She has been a consistent liar since she was on the original White Water Commission, back in the 1970's.
If she wins, the supreme court will go so far left, it will live at the edge of socialism, and your guns will follow.

Treat every gun if it where loaded encompasses all other safety rules
My Marine Corp dad taught me one point in relation to this. If you handle a firearm while not in the act of shooting, clear the action, Do not hand a firearm to anyone without first clearing the action yourself.

The most dangerous spot is loading and un loading area . I tell all shooters If they put their backs toward the fire is the best way . Larry
