What do you consider the most important rule in gun safety?

Keep muzzle pointed in a safe direction has always been my most important, but in the world of concealed carry, your handgun muzzle will sometimes be pointed at some part of your body, or even others. In this case you also must add the awareness of your firearm design, and what it takes to make it safe "as carried" -- and even God forbid, dropped. I think that not enough is said about this on our forums, and some folks are packing weapons that should not be carried with one in the chamber, and vice versa.

Oh, and once again, the magpie has spoken. Hear ye hear ye!!!
There is no chance I will vote for Trump, he's a racist, misogynistic, homophobic fascist.

I totally agree with minding the point of a gun.

But I'll throw a couple more out there;
-Never trust a mechanical safety
-never chamber a round until actually ready to kill something (better process safety)

As a teenager, I nearly blew my head off with a fuddled up fence crossing. Dropped a loaded shotgun,, safety on,, didn't matter..

If a Magpie squawks in the woods and everyone has hit ignore, does it make a sound?

I - just - can't - ignore!! Train wrecks fascinate me. I still watch "The Walking Dead", even though I've come to hate it. Lord, I must be a sick pup. What I'm not however is a

Nor is Trump and most of the folks that the libs accuse of it.

Back to the subject at hand though. I've always had concerns about the safety of some carry pistols, particularly SA autos. I guess I've seen too many handguns dropped, although I've never seen one discharge when dropped. jd

I carry Series 80, Colt 1911's and they have three safeties. Looks scary in a holster with the hammer back, but it is 1000x more safe than a glock or many of the new generation of plastic pistols.

Have carried and used both. As far as a Glock being more or less dangerous than a 1911...well..let's just say that bazillions of G's are in the hands of cops, and I know from experience that cops can break an anvil. having taught it and been on the range a lot, I will stick with the G as far as "simple is as simple does". And I carry a 1911, but no question it takes more thinkin!

I'm OK with the Glock and any of the DA or SA/DA autos. I've got a first gen Colt Woodsman, and never pack it, even holstered with one in the pipe. No one has told me that the safety is "safe enough".

Cocked and locked 1911's do look pretty scary to those of us who don't have one. jd

Think of all guns as a water hose turned on. Never point, pass or deal with it in any way that might wet others.

Sure is sad so many mentally ill take a good question, ignore it and turn this into a political rant. Remember - mental illness is not easily curable. Some here just showed their illness and we can judge you from that.

General: Treat every firearm as if it was loaded thus never point it at anything you don't intend to shoot at it.

Hunting: Always make sure that you have an adequate backstop to any shot so that you know where the bullet will end up if you miss or it passes through the animal.

Attitude. Practice safe handling until it becomes ingrained.

Do not be afraid to confront anyone mishandling firearms on a range. The life you could save could be your own.

Do not, adjust or modify safeties, or sear engagements unless you have a thorough understanding of how to.

I think we should teach them that the bullet comes out of the little hole in the muzzle before we teach them what a sear is.

First rule... watch where you point a firearm - no matter what else happens, if the firearm is pointed in a safe direction, there can be no harm.
All the rest are secondary.

Pretty much as I see it.

Do not point or allow the muzzle to be pointed at something that you do not intend to kill.
