F Class open stock advice

New into the sport and currently have a bell and carlson stock and am looking to get something that has the 3" flat fore end and flat bottomed buttstock. I don't have a ton of money to spend on it so i have found a couple that seem like a good price knowing that there is going to be some additional finishing work on my end to complete them. The two I am looking at so far is Stockade Stock Long range bench rest in the money saver or a Richards micro fit bench rest style stock in laminate. I searched this site as well as googled these stocks to see what kind of experiences people have had and the actual quality of these but didn't come up with enough to make an informed decision. Are these stocks even worth the money? I don't mind spending the time and the added money to finish these stocks out but I just don't wanna waste my money with something that is cheap and isn't gonna last. If you have a better idea on an affordable stock let me know. Thanks.

I am a big fan of my PR&T F-open low boy, Ray is top notch! But they are kinda pricey, Stockys has some nice stocks too, of course McMillan make one too.

I shoot F-Open with a Boyd's Pro Varmint laminated stock. I added a 3" wide removable plate to the forearm. The stock comes finished and ready to go for $129, but I pillar and epoxy bedded the action like most guys do.

I can tell you that my first (and last) Richards "stock" was a mess. They said some finishing would be required, but they didn't tell me that the stock was closer to a log than a firearm. It looked like some chain saw sculptor started making a stock and ran out of gas before he finished. I have plenty of wood working experience and tools, so eventually I was able to make a nice stock. But it took a LOT of work.

I shoot F/TR with a McMillan and if you wanted to use your stock as a club to stop a Grizzly bear, you would chose the McMillan rather than the Boyd's. But the Boyd's is not going to fail if you use it as a gun stock. Plus the McMillan costs 6 times that of the Boyd's but it's not better in any way. What's more, it took a lot of work to finish the McMillan.

I'd pick a Boyd's model you like, make a flat plate to screw onto the forearm, and not look back. The Boyd's is the best bang for the buck by far.

I had a Richard's (not so) microfit stock, inletting was way off in some areas, barrel channel had a big run out in it at the end, lots of sap wood in a supposed AA grade maple stock. I ended up selling it after getting the inletting closer to correct, but never finished it. They take LOTS of work. Not just sand to 400 and spray. I replaced it with a Boyd's and was quite happy with it. I still needed to modify the inletting, but that was for a different trigger.

I guess I have to make a least some comment on this thread.

Someone you might try is Bruce Baer:

For those who have complained vociferously including the Forum Boss on the other thread quoted, I suggest that they could have simply sent the stock back if it did not meet their needs or desires. Richards has a 100% money back guarantee which they will honor if you are unhappy. Yes you have to pay for the return shipping. I had to send one back because they used the wrong inlet but they took it back then made me the correct one.

I have ordered and used over a dozen of the laminated stocks from Richards. Are they perfect drop-in ready to bed? Nope. But it certainly didn't take me anywhere near 'days' to finish sand the outside to my satisfaction. Since most of the inlets I require are simple tubes, rarely is there anything wrong with those as long as they get the line straight.

i think I have 4 of the Benchrest/Thumbhole/Cheekpiece stocks currently, all for F-Class and long range benchrest. The thumbhole had to be expanded on all of these since I seem to have bigger thumbs than the average shooter. ;) Three of the 4 have been clear coated while the fourth was sent off for hydrographics. I'd post photos but everything is in storage until I get resettled in my house from this last move.

You will not find anything less expensive unless you find something by chance at Stockys. I have ordered 4 stocks from Stockys and returned all four. They are always close but not quite right for some odd reason. I'm paying for a finished stock from them so I shouldn't have to do any work unless I know from the start that the barrel channel needs to be opened.

Other than Boyds, you will be stuck with rapidly escalating prices especially from the custom guys. Extreme popularity allow one to continually raise prices until the orders start to slow down. Supply and demand. However, this is still plywood and I think that deserves some consideration. I won't be paying $900 for some plywood but I can machine my own from an inexpensive blank by investing my labor. It won't have their name on it but it will be mine or a client's.

One of the best investments I made for F-Class was a Carbon Fiber stock from Tom Manners. His F-Class stock is superb and has a longer forearm to balance out the longer barrels we sometimes stick on these rifles. Expensive? Yes. Long wait? Yes, unless you get in on the run in progress. The McMillan F-Class is a fine stock also.

There are chassis which I enjoy shooting also but they are all out of your price range. Gary Elisio makes one of the finest. He is a member here.

Alex that stock is definitely sweet however, I just don't have that kind of money to sink into a stock that is only a blank. Thanks for showing though.

New to the forum. What action will the stock be used for? I've got a couple sitting with no need anymore. One for rem 700 LA Ray Bohman black n grey laminate adjustable cheek and butt. And I believe the other is a tooley mbr for a Borden fixed cheek and butt.

It is a savage short action.

Are you talking about the receiver bolt spacing?

Yep, sorry kinda jumped the gun. Im sure someones got one layin around. Its for a pta, but Im pretty sure it will still work with a 10. It will just be tricky to load without anykind of follower or mag so you might have to get creative with that

I understand that in this game you gotta pay to play. I have just spent so much money getting into this sport that i am just running low on the extra funds. I would have no issues going out and spending the $800-1000 on one of these high end stocks if I had the extra cash laying around but that isn't the case for me at the moment.

I think the spacing is like 4.4".
