Salt Bath Nitriding???

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
I have a Bat action that is bedded to a PR&T stock.

I was considering sending the action out to get Nitrided, my question is will this mess with the existing bedding job, bolt fitment, threads?????

I understand this isn`t a coating but a process that the surface of the material goes through.

I have seen bolts done and not actions, they seem to function for their owners just fine.

Again my concern is threads, bolt and bedding.

Can someone please ease my mind on doing this..............

Phil.

Do you have a reason to have an action nitrided? Do you need a harder surface? Are you experiencing accelerated wear?

You have answered your own question Phil. It is not a coating so no dimensional change from "layering". I'll step out on a chemical/physical/structural limb here and say: It is a molecular change - to best of my knowledge. I'm sure if I'm wrong, we'll get to the bottom of it shortly.

For second question, OF COURSE.

Phil,

Seropus manufacturers such as BAT chose their materials and treatments to the best.
Without knowing the initial spécifications, adding a process made at some 550-600°C is most certainly not without conséquences.
Yes, carbon steels CAN be nitrided....!!

No accelerated wear going on, just forming some cases and was after the extra hardness on the lugs and mating surface on the action.

Extra insurance if you will......

This was my way of thinking as well, but I`ve been wrong before, so I just thought a little reassurance would be helpful....

Thanks,

Phil.

Send it back to bat. They will dissasemble it and have it Nitrided for you. At a reasonable fee of coarse.

I apologise that I didn't read your mind about sending it to Bat, since you said send it out. My sugestion was to get your recomendation directly from the people that made your action and will cooperate in every way to help you achieve your goal and to ease your mind. Sincerly, Mike

No blood, No foul Mike..........;)

I am just trying to gather others opinions on it, since I obviously haven`t owned one with the process done to it......

Phil, Bat offers that service on their receivers. Robert,if Bat does it he should have no concerns. As you know 550-600 does not affect his receiver. Basically the process is a case hardening. It will make it slick and more corrosion resistant.

Butch,
BAT know the material they use and the process to apply.

IMHO, 550-600° C represent quite a severe tempering for some construction steej, sufficient to reduce core hardness, more important for me than surface hardness.

If you don't go with BAT's service, check with your vendor-of-choice carefully. Some will not do some brands of actions, for the reasons stated: inappropriate material, issues with tolerances and perhaps dimensional changes post-processing.

Robert, I mentioned Bat only, no other brands. Some brands of receivers will not be melonite treated and is a choice made by the treating company after discourse with the receiver mfg.

600 degrees Celsius equals 1112 degrees Fahrenheit and personally, I don't want my Bat subjected to that temperature unless there is a DEFINITE reason to do so. Just my $.02 worth. Good shooting...James

Hey James, I do remember my math. You better call Bat and let them know they are screwing up. They probably just don't know.

Butch, that conversion was for those who don't think in Celsius degrees and it was not directed at anyone in particular. Good shooting...James

I've done 4 rifles ... 2 surgeon actions (308 and 260) and 2 defiance actions (6.5 SAUM adn 6.5x47). RWS Gunsmithing has done the last 2. No issues that I have run into.

Haven't done an action...probably won't. Did a barrel though!:) They recommend that if you do a barrel, do a brand-spanking-new chambered one; or, as I did: Break a brand-spanking-new one in, clean the dickens out of it, and then submit it for the SBN treatment. However, my recommendation now, after having done that, is if you're wanting to do a barrel...use an old one...one that's been shot out!!! IMO, then you won't be out so much when you have to throw it away!!:(
