20 inch creedmoor for f class?0

Im putting together my first f class gun and cant wait! I dont have endless money so I have to do a budget build, I mainly just want the experience and have some fun. Certainly not looking to break any records. Anyhow, Im a big fan of short heavy barrels and Id like a 8 twist 6.5 creedmoor 20" long. The bullets I have are 130 bergers, 123 lapuas, and 123 amaxs. Heres what Im putting together:

Savage 12 lrp action
X caliber 6.5cm 20" 8 twist
Choate tactical ( Most comfortable with these)
20 moa base
Leupold vx3i 8.5-25 ( already have)

Do you guys think this will be good enough to get out there and have some fun? Everything else I have is either varmint rifles or big stuff with too much recoil. Im so excited to do this! Ive always watched or been too nervous to try it.
 
Why would you want to handicap yourself with a short barrel in F Open? You'd probably give up 150+fps over a 28"-30" tube. If you like wind drift shoot FTR, at least everyone is in the same boat.
 
Get out and shoot with whatever you got. Make sure that is what you like before dropping some big coin. Try out a PRS fun match as well your rifle is suited a little bit more towards that type of shooting
 
If your are on a budget I would recommend the 6.5x47Lapua. Its more accurate and the cost of brass per reload is less. A lot less.

For example. CreedMoor brass, last time I purchased some was 42$ a box but I have seen it for as low as 40. That is for a box of 50 so consider it to be about $80 a month. Next consider brass life. At the VERY BEST you will get 10 reloads out of it. That is a cost of $0.08 per round per shot.

Now the Lapua costs $105 per 100 but last more then 25 reloads and many get 35+. But we will for the sake of being conservative and say 25 reloads. That means your brass will cost you $0.042 a reload. That is almost half the cost.

Then there is the fact that small rifle primers are usually less expensive and you will use a grain or two less of powder and get the same performance because the 47 Lapua is more efficient.

The best way for you to learn this game is to put together what you have and go out there and learn.

Creedmoor brass can be had at Midway for $33/50 right now on sale. Their normal price is less than $40.

However, the rest of your analysis is spot on, and 10 reloads for Hornady brass might be a bit high. 5-8 is a good range depending on your load specs.

I don't usually look at online retail because of shipping. If you can get it with free shipping though that is a big plus.
 
You say you're "putting it together", so yes most of us would probably recommend a longer barrel.

If what you really want to do, but don't want to say so, is put together a short-barreled tactical rifle and practice windreading with it at F Class matches, then do what you want.

In either case, especially if you're just starting out and are doing it for fun and education, "shoot what you brung".
 
Absolutely take whatever you have and start participating. You won't be sorry. I didn't see in your info what distance you plan on trying out F-Class initially, but with the short barrel, you'd be better off in midrange (300-600 yd) where velocity is slightly less critical than it will be at 1000 yd. Thank you guys for all you input! I forgot to add Ill be using this rifle for mid range coyote gun 300-600. I am going to use the advice about the 6.5x47 lapua. I would much rather use lapua brass. I was sold on the creedmoor because someone let me shoot one and I was instantly hooked. And looking at some quick data the lapua really gives up nothing to the CM and I think it will do better in a short barrel too.
 
You wont regret it. The small primer handles the pressure that will take advantage of the shorter barrel better too. Good luck and shoot often and much. :)

The only thing I liked was the factory ammo for the creedmoor but I never shoot factory loaded ammo anyway haha

The build you propose is good enough to get out there and have some fun. It's your money. Serious F-class shooters would never go your way but a purpose built F-class rifle is built for only f-class competition, and while not requiring "endless money" is still quite expensive. The 6.5X47 vs 6.5 Creedmoor is an ongoing debate. Either one will work. The Choate stock is not really much good off a rest, my first F-TR build was on one and it was OK off a bipod. You will be in the F-Open class and competing with other shooters using rests. You will probably want to up your bullets to the 140's for long range, but the lighter ones will work well for midrange. X-caliber barrels are a good match for a Savage action. My Savage Model 12 in 223 with an X-caliber barrel is very accurate. You will need the 20 MOA base for long range and the scope you have is more than adequate. Put your rifle together, get out there and have some fun. If it becomes your thing you can restock, rebarrel, rechamber, and spend a fortune on scopes, barrels and precision reloading like the rest of us who have this madness. Good luck.
 
I am not sure of the class requirements, but you might try the "magic" length of 21.75 for the barrel. I take this from 'Secretes from the Houston Warehouse' article published in Precision Shooting a while back. They claimed in the article it helped obtain sub 0.1" groups for benchrest.
 
Don't cut yourself short! Go straight to a Kreiger 30" barrel. You will not regret it, in fact it will save you money when you figure out that if you want to be competitive that is what you will need and you will not need to scrap your 20" barrel. It will shoot great for you at mid range out to long range.
 
For a multi purpose rifle I like 22in as a good compromise. Carrying and balance are so much better in the field. If you find you want to get serious in Fclass, you can always add a longer barrel in the future. You can easily fabricate a tracking plate to attach to the for end using the screw holes which attach the rail onto the Choate.
 
I bought a Tikka CTR 6.5 Creedmoor that comes with a 20" barrel. I was breaking it in with Hornady Whitetail 129 grain yesterday and I only got 2 shots off with a Magneto Speed before rain stopped me. It was loping along at about 2600 fps.

As a side note, that ammunition was filthy. i started out cleaning it after each shot to get started and the patch would come out black.
