Inside Neck reamers

I am looking at possibly inside neck reaming these dreaded donuts. primers are still great in the brass i have.

For those who have forster inside neck reamers, what is the diameter of the shaft that attaches to the end of the cutter?

My bullets are above the donut when seated, but i wanted to do an experiment for myself to see if this has any effect on bullet seating consistency despite my bullet being above this region. I have a trimmer already (an old one), so I wanted to see if this cutter would fit my existing trimmer.

K & M reloading tools has a "Doughnut Remover" tool. It goes inside many, if not most, neck turning tools (where the turning mandrel would go) and cuts the INSIDE of the case at the doughnut area. I have used them with great success..

I asked the same question some time ago. It is 0.185" diameter (same as the pilot shafts for the Redding case trimmer.)

If the do-nut was a good thing manufacturers would make cases with do-nuts installed. I do not want a restriction at the shoulder/neck juncture; so I remove them.

XBBR, do you have a lot of time? It all started back in 1968. Back in the old days I taught people to listen, normally I would start a story with "Once upon a time...". Every time I started a story with "Once upon a time" someone would ask when I finished the story: "Was that for rea?l" or "did that really happen?".

When you read the part about getting do-nuts you assumed I said I never get do-nuts. What I said was I have cases that never form donuts and then I went on to say I have cases when fired in some chambers that will never form a donut. After that it became one of those 'and then' moments. And then I said I have rifles with chambers that created donuts and there was not a lot I can do about it. And then I said I was the only one that understood the causes of do-nuts, and that locked everyone up.

I have chambers that will never created a donut, I have chambers that I can guarantee a do-nut will form when fired; or I should say if it doesn't it will, by design.

Funny you should mention that. I just got some brand new Hornady cases (270 Win) with doughnuts pre-installed. (Not real doughnuts, but restrictions at the neck/shoulder junctions nevertheless. A pin gage just the right size to enter the unfired case mouth will encounter an obstruction before it can get past the base of the neck. A .002" smaller gage clears it freely.)

I know the scratches you are referring to. They are so "micron thin" if you will, that I have found that there is no discernable loss in accuracy. However, there is a definite loss of that doughnut! LOL!!

busmoba, in the big inning before the Internet eloaders dealt with do-nuts. Lee made a TARGET MODEL set of dies. The set included a neck sizing die with a reamer that centered the in the top of the die and case neck. The advantage to this system was outside neck support. There is no end to the number of reamers I have; when reaming the neck I must have neck support. Removing the do-nut was a second thought but the reamer had a cutter on the end of the reamer to prevent the relaoder from standing on the drill when pushing the reamer into the neck.


I have a .350" reamer; it will not remove stock from the inside of the neck unless I use a bushing on the outside of the neck. I have a RCBS reamer die. The die is a full length sizing die that returns the case to minimum length. Once the ram is raised the reamer is feed through a guide in the top of the die. With the Lee and RCBS system the reamer must be lubed. I am aware there are those that have problems with scratches, anytime something rotates with zero clearance the operator of the reamer must be operating in a clean environment.

What I have been doing is using a regular reamer that machinest use. You can purchase them in .001 steps to get the correct dimension needed.

I use Wilson trimmers and I have had them grind me special sized inside neck reamers. The purpose for the special grinds are to remove any tight spots on the inside of the necks and to remove the donut. I've seen my ES numbers drop and be much more consistent since I have been doing this process.

Yes Guffey, we all know that you've probably been dealing with donuts/do-nuts/doughnuts ad nauseum probably since the Crusades! I'm almost certain that the steel tips on the crossbow bolts had donuts also! Also, since the Pope issued and encyclical that the "heathens" could only be shot(after the introduction of firearms) with either square or some other shaped projectile! Only the Christians could shoot each other with round balls. Had to be donuts even that far back!

If you can't contribute without being such a know-it-all with an attitude, why don't you author a book with all your knowledge in it! Sales dollars would be a big indicator of how greatly your attitude is appreciated!

after the Wilson Neck reamer I take some 600grt psa sandpper, and use a mandrel and sand the inside of the neck, the bullets seat like glass neck thickness is +or- .0003 now if I only had a $550 barrel and a bat and a stock and a NF and a Seb and new eyes, why do I put myself through this
