Mid-range deer cartridge

I would say a plain old 243 winchester with a 100 gr bullet or a good old 308 with 150 gr bullet. Both will shoot much further than you are looking to and reasonable to load for.

My choice would be a 308 . A 250 pound hog can't take a well place shot with a 120 GR bullet. But they a can run with the same shot from a 243 . Larry

.308 with hand loads can't lose there. Especially if you want a walking gun.

6BR. deer are thin skinned. low recoil, extremely accurate, great choice of bullets

I would go with a standard 260, 7-08, or 308. No need to overthink it for midrange deer. Control recoil by adjusting load and brake. Start him out light and work up.
