Norma 6Dasher Brass

My reamers are all .004"-.005" over. I don't consider .002" no neck turn. If the brass is .013x" I'm cancelling the reamer (back ordered anyway) and getting one with .005" clearance.

Guys, I posted a couple of pages back the brass I measured at the neck was .0132 to .0123. I recently measured one at .0134. Times that by 2=.0268 + your pressure ring diameter of say on average .24350 for a .2703. I personally like .003 clearance also. This would no give the NO turners a .2733. It comes down to YOUR bullets pressure ring diameter, which I have seen from .2430--.2440. Do the simple math based on what bullet you plan to use and what clearance you prefer. Now order your reamer accordingly. If I were a no turner (which I am not), a .272--.273 should satisfy MOST no turn situations. Just my humble opinion.

Most are gonna turn anyway, so measuring loaded brass out of the box is pointless... By a 100 or 2 and have at what you will... I do believe brass thickness has been stated more then once...

Ray

Measuring the necks at several places before turning will measure the consistency of thickness of the brass around the case.

Got my brass today. Just wondering if anybody else found any cases with indentations like these on the shoulders? Do I just toss these out?

Rec'd mine today. Seated a 103 Vapor Trail and the .2675" I measured is thinner than the .268" of my Lapua brass.

No dents in the single box I inspected.

As noted above, they will not fit in a RCBS 3 shellholder but the #2 works with the beefier web.

I know people do not like to see that, but as shoulder angles get to 30˚ and steeper with brass production, that seems to be a more common phenomenon (and the steeper the shoulder the more likely you are to see them in new brass). If it's a defect that goes through the shoulder metal so that it splits out when you fire it - -pitch it, but if it's just a "dent", then load it, shoot it, it will disappear and have a nice day. I find if you look at them closely with magnification you can tell which ones are just a "dent" and which ones are forming defects that are splits waiting to open up after firing.

Killshot's measurement would say that a .272 neck would be about perfect? Or am I missing something?

I think Russ, Robert, Me, etc are looking for is an average thickness based on what is going into people's hands now, over a wide range of shooters. One or two guys is too small a sample to go by. No way I would go by samples or test cases.

I hope I don't have to order another reamer (starting the wait all over again) but it's better than neck turning....

As to shell holders, I load on a Forster Coax so it shouldn't make any difference to me. I am also sure I have several different SH for 308 case heads and a number 2 as well.
I know Shiraz has PTG making reamers for the new brass but PTG reamer quality has been, dare I say, suspect of late. Wondering about JGS and just how long it would take them to make one for it?
There isn't any proprietary BS involved in the reamer thing is there?

That makes sense. I thought I was the only one that hated neck turning.:)

Just a heads up.

We have had a couple of calls where the cases were too tight in the rim/base area to fit into the standard shell holder.

1) We have spoken to Redding and they are making a special batch of No. 1 shell holders that are plus .004" in the slot and we should be getting them by the end of next week.
2) We have also ordered a special cutter (due to arrive tomorrow) and will program our CNC machine so we can skim off a few thou from the existing shell holders. That way we can satisfy some of the people that need them in a hurry in case these cases do not fit their shell holders. Those should be available for purchase by the end of the week.
I plan on annealing after first firing

Good move Larry

I have seen some wild number thrown around here but .008 loaded round clearance on a 6mm. is totally ridiculous, on a larger caliber maybe but you will pay the price for over working the neck. .0015 to .002 is fine on a dasher and with over a 100 firings per case. I see no reason to change, if i did the max. would be .003. So talk 6mm not .284 and 30 cal. clearance.
This is a wonderful thing Shiraz has done to save the fire forming issue, i would rather trim and turn any day. The long neck is not a issue, but to some they would like to move the shoulder forward and get a little more capacity. With the 6x47 out there i don't see moving the shoulder ahead a major improvement when you can get 3100 from the Dasher case as is. Myself i would like to get back what Lapua took away, the 1.570 chamber……. James O'Hara

My Hat is off to (SHIRAZ)
Not only has he done his homework.
He has invested in excess $ 500,000
Without him we wouldn't have Dasher Brass
Thanks Larry
