SUPER SHOOT

Does money make you a better shooter ? I think yes.
Reason for yes is . How else can a person afford the equipment and the time it takes to pratice .
Billy won from being a great shot. The bullets the scope the tuner was all part of the combination. Larry

IMHO it is not only Bench Rest it is MOST shooting sports--One of the area shooters here is one of the top 10 Black Powder (Tru Muzzle FRONT Loader) and he is mid 60's and very few younger than him --22 LR Bench Rest is pretty much the same. As mentioned it takes a lot of TIME and $$$$$

Two years ago I talked to a top shooter at the Super Shoot. Some of the Hall of Fame shooters get paid by the manufacturers to test powder and bullets. I'm sure it isn't a lot of money and it's a small number of shooters that get paid. Tony Boyer has a large expensive motor home. They don't award money for winning, just plastic trophy's.
Don't know why you keep bringing up motor homes as it relates to BR? I don't even know if T.B. owns one. I do know he turned his passion for BR into a means to supplement his income by offering individuals a one on one BR seminar and of course through his book proceeds. Companies "sponsoring" individuals in sports is not unique to BR.

Webster,

Not only, do I know every Hall of Fame member that's alive, but I am one. Occasionally some of us are asked to test products, tuners, barrels, scopes ect. But, I've never received a check for doing it or know of anyone in short range benchrest that has.

Tony Boyer in short range BR has gotten an abundance of free stuff over the years and justifiably so. At one time Tony was sponsored by Speedco. That lasted about a year and was done. But other then Tony there isn't much sponsorship going on!

For the record Tony Boyer is not a rich man. Tony and his wife Faye lived in a well kept trailer for probably 40 years And Not until a few years back did they build an actual house.

Most of us have just figured out a way to pay for our habit. Start at the top and work your way down the Hall of Fame list. Most have either gotten into Gunsmithing or bullet making or shooting supply sales.

Being one of the youngest shooters (24) if it wasn't for the help and guidance from two great friends, and also another young shooter getting me into Br, I wouldn't be half the shooter I am now, which might not be much at all but I enjoy it.... This "sport"/ hobby is very time consuming and fund consuming, I have taken others my age and let them use my equipment and try to get them into it. Most people my age won't put in the time and most don't have the money. It makes it even harder when the people you shoot against don't wanna help because they want to win as much as you... Also traveling kills a lot of people, for instance it's hard to compete in score shooting when the guys are shooting from Maine to S.c./ Georgia. Hard to take but so much time off work to travel and be able to afford it at the same time. Just my 2cents

The reason Tony Boyer is where he at he has devoted his life into being the Best
And he done just that. Larry

TB is VERY dedicated to LIFE anything he does there is only one way WFO. Tony was in his 40's and STILL one of the Top Fast Pitch Softball players--once he realized that he could no longer compete at HIS LEVEL he walked away.
Having worked for a Power Company Contractor that allowed him to practice in his off months he built a 300 yd range out of the side of a Mountain and Every day he Practiced,he practiced and then he practiced. Rain, sleet, snow winds it did not matter HE PRACTICED.

A lot has been said about all the "FREE" stuff he has received --MOST of it was WON at matches.

Tony B is truley ONE OF A KIND I feel Humbled to know him

Jim,

I agree with everything you said except that , "Most of his free stuff was WON at matches!" It is simply not true. I've been going to Short range matches with Tony for over 20 years. There is nothing to win except a "simulated" wood plaques and maybe a patch at the nationals. Occasionally there is a Prize drawing or a raffle . But Nothing to win by shooting good.

It's not like the mid or long range nationals with the big prize tables.
