Any Interest in 40X .22 LR Actions if they made a run?

Good Afternoon All:

I am interested in having my Gunsmith build a .22 bench gun for me. I asked him what I should be shopping for as far as parts while I wait on his list. He told me that he has the best luck and best results using Remington 40X actions. Fair enough. I own 2 rim fire 40X's (one a HB and the other a USMC gun), and I enjoy the heck out of both of them. They shoot better than I do which is not saying much, but still......

So, off I went looking for some. I did not see any other than a few complete rifles with significant prices on Gun-I-am-so-broke-er.

I was at the NRA Convention last week and I had a long conversation with several of the management types at Remington as well as their custom shop. While they are not making big promises, they say that they might have something in the fall for me. I assume that they would build up a bunch of guns to sell and any left over actions would go to Brownell's or whomever.

So to cut to the chase..... I am preparing to write them a letter in a few weeks (gives both of us a chance to recoup from the Show). I will remind them of my definite interest in an action and the fact that my smith will likely buy a few for stock. Does anyone else out here have interest in buying a 40X action for their rim fire builds? I will be glad to incorporate any interest that you folks might have, and if I find out something affirmative I will post it to the page here.

Regards,

Wally

Stiller makes a Rem footprint RF action in single shot as well as repeater versions. I have the repeater version coming, and to me (at least) that would be where the market is. There are plenty of single shot RF action makers out there.

Agree , that's why I think remington needs to modernize its 40x Rimfire action . For the $ dif between custom and a fact rem , I'd pick the custom , unless remington made some changes .

Yep, just get a 2500x from Stiller and be done with it. No need for a special run from Remington as they would probably make the cost not too much different.

Full disclosure, I have a 2500x and love it.

Only if they change a few things , tenon diam , bolt handle for two off the top of my head .

They cannot change the tenon diameter because it has to be that size essentially because the bolt raceways are broached from the front. The tenon size is not all that important if one uses a properly installed bushing for a 3/4" tenon.

More chance of tolerance stacking . Like I said , they would have to do some improvement to get my money over a custom .
I've got a few 40x rimfires , tried the bushing , made my own , still not as good as the custom . For the $ remington will have to charge , it's a no brainier , the custom . Just check the Br 50 rimfire equipment list , or read why the tenon dia is so important in Bill Calfees book .

Believe me there is plenty of BS in that book, including actions that work. There is a pretty big difference between making a bushing and making and installing it properly. They can be every bit as good as custom. The problem is not the tenon, it's getting a straight action.
FWI the guy that just won the triple crown match did it with an Anschutz 54 based gun.
Also, if ypu read Mr. C's endless droning on about actions you'd believe everything has to be blueprinted. One of the guys up in my neck of the woods just shot 8 250's in a row with a boxstock Stiller action on a 7 1/2 pound 6X scoped sporter.
Lastly, BR 50 has'nt been shot in 20 years.

Maybe that's when I stoped . An anny and a 40x are 2 completely diff beasts
Agreed about getting a action with true threads . Hence my point on remington needing to make changes .
B Calfees book does explain why having an action or barrel ten on the correct diam or length as to not choke the bore at the worst spot , just in front of the chamber .
Until I read or see more competitive 22 rf rifles I'll continue to reference his work .
Yes I do my own , I've gotten into 200-300 yd shooting with 22 refs about 8 yrs ago due to the restricted 1000 yd ranges down here . I was a shooter at the orig 1000 yd at Williamsport . The 22 at 2-300 is about as challenging .
Anyway good points you've brought up , I'm never to old to learn , it just takes longer .

I don't mean straight threads, I mean straight action. They're heat treated last and unfortunately that lead to warpage.
Next time you try a bushing thread only the outside and then locktite it into the action, then true it up and thread the inside, you're likely going to have better results.

Do you know what equipment that Ed used on his sporter?

I wonder if the 54.30 will become competitive with the custom 40x and others. My 54.30 flat out shoots, maybe as well or better than the 40X/Lilja mini Palma Gene Davis smithed.

Depends on your shooting discipline, but probably not.

Well, As far as their receivers, they are better today than the old days. I haven't had anything to do with the rest of their rifle parts and can't give an opinion. I do have a 25-06 that is a later model that I bought cheap. The guy said 3"was the average group size. Haven't shot it.
