223 AI 2000MR ?

So I have a shiny new barrel on the way for my Stevens 200.
Specs
223AI
26" Savage varmint contour
1/7 twist

I have several boxes of 75 gr Amaxs on the shelf and a few pounds of Power Pro 2000MR.
My question is has anyone here been playing with this powder in the 223AI? I have been searching but havent really seen much. I can easly just start with the 223 load and work up but I was wondering if anyone has any pet loads with this powder?

Thanks in Advance

Not in the AI,but I have been running 25gr in a 223 with a 26" McGowan and 90gr smk at 2780fps out of a Wyld chamber. The little thing shoots great out to 600yds.

My best speed/accuracy combo for my 223AI with 22" barrel has been AA2520 with 77SMK. I can hit just over 3,000 FPS with that. I do use 2000MR in my 308 with 185 Hybrids. It provides the best velocity I've ever seen from really heavy 308 bullets.

Alliant lists 2950 fps top load with the 75 amax in the standard case. So we shall see how it goes. Now if my barrel would show up already I could get to work.

I run 2000MR in my 223AI with Berger & JLK 90VLDs; accuracy has been good at velocities comparable to what I used to get with Viht N550. My 26" Krieger 1-7tw may be a little slow, because I wasn't getting much over 2800fps with moly'd 90s out of it with 2000MR. Whatever, it shot good enough to get hits on 1300 & 1400yd targets at a local practical/tactical steel match a few years ago. I ran out of internal elevation on the Vortex 6-24x50 PST between 1300 & 1400, and had to hold over 5 MOA to get a hit at 1400.

2800 sounds pleanty fast! I talked to the Sierra folks awhile back about their 90gr SMK they topped out at 2600 in a 28" barrel with IMR 4064.

Out of perverse curiosity would you be willing to PM me your load?

Take a look at 8208 BRX too. Works well in my AI with 75/80 gr A-Max's.
I am working with 8208 also, it appears to be quite dense & I can get more grains of powder under the 69 TMK (long for weight) & I was also told to try 2000MR for the same reason but cannot find any. I asked about it before in the Varmiter section but was told it should be in Reloader section, though really no different than being here so the thread died.

Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing what 2000MR will do & thanks everyone for sharing.

I get 3000fps with 75 and 80 a-max out of my 24'' ar 223, in my bolt 26'' gun it was 3200fps.
You should be getting some great velocity. 2000MR is the powder!

This barrel will be 26", so if you are getting 3200 in the standered chaamber I will be really interested in seeing what I can get with the AI.

Your mileage may vary; however, there have been quite a number of F-TR shooters over the last few yrs who have tried 2000MR for competition. It will give you better velocity in a 308 or in a 223 than most of the powders people use (much like N550) BUT, everyone I know who has tried it gets flyers at long range. In a 308 it will produce some really tight groups at 300, but in a 20 shot string at 1000 you get 4 to 6 high 9s on an F class target, plus the ones where you dialed down and went out the bottom. When I finally got fed up and chrono'ed two 20 shot strings I'd get a string of 5 or 6 shots with an ES of maybe 15, and then get one that was 80 FPS fast, maybe 2 that were there, then it would settle down gain, in a match that is just enough to get you to dial out the bottom ARRG!

I like it in my 7-08 as a hunting powder, great velocity and if I get a velocity variation it makes no difference out to about 400 yards, (which is about as far as I think is ethical to be shooting at animals).

I won't be shooting my AR at 1000, but will be doing so with my 308 hopefully in a couple of months, so thanks for that info, likely will stay with Varget or 8208 with my 5R 308 !
I believe you are stating this powder will produce flyers in 223 as well, is that correct ? I am interested in groups out to 600 with my AR.
Thanks again

I'm getting ~2850 fps out of a 26" barreled F-TR bolt rifle with the 80.5 Fullbores and H322. This rifle has essentially zero freebore, so the bullets are sunk pretty deep in the case. However, the load is not all that hot and they shoot phenomenally well. The COAL is such the rounds are short enough so they will just barely feed from an AICS mag. I'd imagine you could do much better with your .223AI. Velocity is nice, but good precision and velocity combined with a temperature-resistant powder is much better. H322 is a very fine grained powder and can give you very good velocity and precision out of a shorter [relatively] barrel. As XTR mentioned, PP2000MR might give you pressure problems if you shoot under conditions where you might see temperature swings of >/= 25-30 degrees or more during the course of a day. IMO, it's not necessary if you can get the velocity/precision you need from a powder like H322.

Thanks for the info. Still waiting for the barrel so I am on hold till then. We are moving to AZ in a couple weeks so will pick up a pound of H322 when we get setteled and try that also.

Looks like I have a chance to pick up some 2000MR tomorrow. As stated before, I won't be using it in my 308, thanks to your info. Is the problem too much SD in the muzzle vel. ? I still have interest in this powder for the 223 & 69TMK. I hope these flyers don't occur at 600, thanks

The problem is more about ES than SD. For what ever reason it seems that it will give 10% to 20% of your shots with significantly higher velocity than the others, and it is also double based and temperature sensitive.

All of what I've described in my 308 loads will be exacerbated in a 223 with the smaller volume, but you may not see issues if you keep it to 600 and under.

Personally I think it's a great powder for hunting loads. It measures really well, gives really good velocity, and at most hunting ranges for medium sized game it should be great.
