Rem 700 VLS 6mm Rem

photo%202_zpszpxyfgow.jpg

These two targets were shot from my 6mm Rem, Hornady 105gr bthp, 42.2gr & 42.5gr H435o at 415 yards. Disregard the three holes on the far right, they were from 36.5gr H4895.

This was the best target with 36.8gr H4895, same bullet and same distance. I tried 36.5gr & 37.1gr H4895 and they were both better than the H4350 also but not as good as the 36.8gr.
What's your thoughts? Anyone else tried the H4895 in their 6mm?

ETX -

Howdy !

H4895 has a burn rate I'd consider for something like .222 Rem . But hey, that's just me.

I've had good success shooting w/ high load densities in my " DEEP 6 " wildcat.
Case capacity is 51.2gr H2O vs 6mm Rem @ 55gr.

While I've been shooting the wildcat case chuck full of IMR7828, the new IMR4955 has gotten my attention. I'm going to try it out w/ some Sierra " tipped " 95MKs, soon.

IMHO -
H4350, IMR 4451 and powder w/ even slower burn rates is the way to go; when talking about
6mm's w/ this much case capacity. IMR4955 should be a good " fit ".

Couple of things I'd suggest:

  1. If this is a VLS, in a VLS stock wrap some sand paper around about a 7/8 socket and sand the pressure point out of the front of the stock and get the barrel free floating.
  2. Torque the action screws. and when you can, get it pillar bedded. I had a 308 VLS that shot about like that until I put did those two things.
  3. I've never loaded for the 6Rem, but it's pretty close to the 243 parent of my 6SLR. H4895 is way to fast. Looks like you are also working with H4350, it should work fine. You can also try N160, IMR7828ssc, or H4831. Any/all of them should work really well in the 6Rem.

I thought the 4350 would be the better choice but have more of the 4895 on hand so I gave it a try. Do yall think I'm nowhere close to the node with the 4350 and thats why the groups are not as good as the 4895? I shot 3 five shot groups with each powder and all three 4895 groups where better than the 4350 groups.

I had a Rem 700 VLS 6mm Rem in the late 90`s early 2,000`s,,it would not shoot the 107 Sierras with the 9.125 twist and nobody made a 95 at that time,,I shot the 87 Hornady BTHPs and RL19 and the 70 NBT and 4064,,

I dont think you have enough twist to shoot the long 105s,,get some 95 SMKs or VLDs and give it a go with a 4350-4831 burn rate powder and see what it does,,

the rifle should be helped by the above suggestion to remove the pressure point from under the bbl, also the action screws, + these ideas I have found help greatly, mark the back of the locking lugs with a felt tip then close/open a number of times - remove the bolt and look at the lugs, if they do not show equal marking of contact, then stone lightly the one with the most felt tip removed and lightly smooth the other only once, after this re mark them and do it again until they show similar felt tip removal (= contact) ---- next take a little epoxy and apply to the back area of the recoil lug hole and to the under side of the chamber for about 1 inch forward and 3/4 of the radius - wax the action/bbl and install tighten the screws 90% and let dry, then remove action and clean the edges of the epoxy - clean the underside of the action removing the wax you used.

this has take many a rifle of mine from 3/4 incher to well under 1/2 and often .300 area with factory bbls.

H4895 is far too fast for that cartridge. Exactly, what bullet are you using? If you really want to know if it's a keeper, use an appropriate weight bullet with a flat base and better powder first, then explore boat tails. Think of it in a simplified fashion. 243 Win is an overbore cartridge. 6mm Rem is even more of an overbore. Go to IMR or H 4350 or 4831. However, if you ever feel like playing around with reduced loads, H4895 is ok for that. Good luck.
