How much does fluting reduce weight?

Can of worms......................OPEN!!!!!!;)

I realize this can widely vary, so lets scale it back a little to the Rem. Varmint contour.

How much weight can you expect to loose after fluting???

Curiosity killed the cat here, I`m not expecting it to be a significant weight savings, just curious to see what others have found.

I would call who may do the fluting as he probably has a general idea how much you lose depending on barrel length.

How long a barrel?

I just had a pound taken off of my latest FTR barrel. It's got 6 24" deep flutes.

Straight or spiral flutes?

How long a barrel?

Probably ½ to 3/4 lb I would guess, more if you spiral flute.

I was told for a standard flute job that 4-8 ounces is about normal. That would be a flute job similar to a standard Remington flute

WOW! I didn`t think that 16ozs was possible, that's great.

Makes sense that the spiral would take more, more surface area to take from....

This was more to my thinking.

How have you been, got another twister the other day I see.......

Before you get too far down the road, my barrel is 32" finished and 1" at the muzzle. It's a little more meat than a Rem Varmint. I had Kampfeld Custom flute it.

The blank weighed 8.75 lbs before it was chambered.

I'm doing well the crazy thing is most of these Twisters that have been happening I've been sleeping right through them. In Oklahoma we worry about them just about as much as you all worry about earthquakes, they're really just no big thing

Good looking piece.

I've got a 30" 1.25" straight barrel headed to Boltfluter as we speak. Gonna be vortex fluted 180* twist. I'll see if he can weigh it before and after.
