Rimfire action?

Who makes the best rimfire action?????

Been looking at the Hall RB / LP action.

Phil.

I am not a benchrest shooter and don't do much 50m prone anymore, but I do have a 2500XR (repeater version of the Stiller 2500X) and can attest to the quality of the action. I purchased it from Dan at KSS, he is a great guy as is Jerry Stiller. They both set the example of customer service, I had a few minor issues to resolve on my build and Jerry and Dan were great!

Dittos on jbell's reply. I also purchased a Stiller 2500XR, though I bought mine direct from Jerry. Chambered & fitted a Krieger 22rf blank in sendero contour, put it into a Manners T4A stock, and have a great trainer rifle for practical/tactical steel matches. If I were building a BR rig, I'd go with the 2500X in a heartbeat.

I would third that nomination for the Stiller action. Richard Gorham is putting a Shilen ratchet barrel to one, for me, as we speak. Well. maybe not right now, it's near midnight, but he's working on it and I hope to have it soon.

Phil,
As you can see, it sometimes boils down to what different people like better. IMHO, you cannot go wrong with either the Hall or the Stiller. I recommend you take a close look at both and see which has the little extra's over the other that you are looking for. If you can, go locate one of each nearby and feel and run the actions yourself. Perhaps you can find them at a nearby competition and speak to the owners. But BOTH are super nice.

Mine feeds, extracts, & ejects pretty much flawlessly. The only ammo it won't feed is Eley with flat-nose EPS bullets. If I were shooting BR competition, I'd have gone with the Stiller 2500X, which is a single shot action. I know jbell has had some issues with getting his to extract & eject with Eley ammo, but mine hasn't had a hiccup as far as extraction/ejection with several types of Eley, as long as it has the round nose bullet. I used a PTG Ultimate EPS reamer on the Krieger bbl on mine, while jbell's was chambered with a reamer that I don't have the specs for. Perhaps his chamber is tighter than mine?

I have a stiller 2500X that was built into an F-open training rifle with mcmillian f class stock etc. just tested it at Lapua facility and it shot 3 10 shot groups at 50 meters that measured 12mm and same groups at 100 meters that measured 25mm. What I really like is I can drop in a bix and Andy trigger (or any other Remington clone) and exactly simulate my f-open rifle. I don't have any real experience with other actions but I have been extremely happy with the stiller.

I recently took delivery of a Killough/Gorham built 2500X action rifle with a Harrell's tuner and Jewell trigger. They did the Eley test for me and I bought 2500 rds of the ammo. I shot it yesterday for the first time. After dialing everything in I shot a 248 with 12x's and another 248 with 13x's. I didn't set up my own flags as the range I was at already had about 30 flags set out so I just read the wind with those. I need some more practice as I have not shot rimfire matches in years. The action is smooth as silk and throws the brass in exactly the same spot every time. I also have a Suhl built with a Stith toothpick stock and Harrell's tuner. I have not tested it yet with the tuner and stock installed but I shot scores in the low to mid 240s with about 10x's in completely stock trim and Eley match ammo from machine 5. I assume the scores will improve but in comparison to the 2500X action the Suhl is not as nice. I did try a friend's Hall some years back and believe it is a fine action. I have also shot a few highly customized Remington 40x's in 22LR and they are also excellent actions and if I could find one at a very good price I would use one. However, IMHO this 2500X is the best action I have ever used in rimfire.

I have a 10x action, and they are hard to load with the small port, and they take a ton of work to make them right. Mine still won't eject correctly, I have more parts on order. The Halls are nice actions, but you don't see many in the winners circle. Turbos are a good action, you see plenty in the winners circle, but again, have a tiny little loading port. I just ordered a Stiller action after fighting my 10X for the last 9 months. My tenX shoots very well, but it's hard to operate in a match where timers are involved. If possible go to a match and check out several different actions to see them with your own eyes before you drop the coin.

Phil,
AS you can see, once you get into this quality of actions, some issues become a matter of personal preference. If I were trying to figure out which one to invest in, I'd find me one of each, whether by attending a Rimfire competition and asking to "feel the action" or finding the action somewhere else and see how I like it first hand. I've been fortunate enough to find shooters who already own them and they let me shoot their rifles. Now I have never shot a Killough/Gorham action, but do know Dan Killough, his guys and the products they sell are top notch. SO now the ball is in your court. Some good points have been made in the posts about particular things about these actions. And it may be which one makes you feel warm and fuzzy because they all shoot. The rest is up to you and your ability to shoot them AND finding the ammo they like the best, A VERY IMPORTANT INGREDIENT. Good luck!

Just a quick update on my reply - since bedding my Stiller 2500XR into another Manners stock (an extra they did for Euro Optics' run of 22rf trainers), it now feeds the Eley EPS flatnose ammo out of the Savage magazines just as smoothly as it did RN ammo before. Not sure what changed with the new stock, but I'm not complaining about the improved feeding!
