Relative shape of ogive

I recently read that a custom bullet maker makes a 6.5mm bullet with a "10 cal ogive". Can someone help put this into perspective for me by telling me how many cal ogive some of the other popular bullets have?

- Berger hybrid, 6.5mm 140 gr
- Berger LRBT, 6.5mm 140gr
- Sierra MK, 6.5mm 142gr

Thanks,

Trevor

Hey Trevor!

Been a while man. Here's a good resource: http://appliedballisticsllc.com/ballistics-resources/bullet-data/

The ogive radius is given for each of the bullets linked on that page.

The length of the radius for a nose is a hard thing to put in perspective. You can have a nose that's short which has a long radius; this would result in a highly secant (VLD) profile. But if the nose is longer, the same ogive radius could result in a tangent nose. Nose length and meplat diameter combine with the ogive radius to determine 'how secant' a nose shape is.

You looking at Cauterucios'? 119 grain?

Bryan,

It has been a while. I hope we will get a chance to shoot together sometime this coming season.

Thanks for the great explanation. My take away is that # of cal ogive is only part of the equation. I need more info on the bullet.

I have a 6.5-284 and the bullet that I am looking at is the Cauterucio 6.5mm 145gr bullet. I would like to find out if this would have better ballistics that the hybrid design. I have no interest in messing around with a VLD shape though.

Thanks for dumbing everything down for me.

Hi Trevor. I can tell you that Bob makes some of the most consistent bullets available at any price. Tangent ogives are the norm for his bullets. Regardless of BC, his bullets are definitely worth shooting.

Trevor if you haven't already found it, this post may be of interest:

I had some of his bullets way back when I was messing with the 6.5 Grendel. Never got very far with them or it though after realizing it lacked horsepower for anything much over 130 grains. Sent a few of each design to Brian to study for one of his books so we'd have reliable numbers by which to compare them to other products.

Agreed! After seeing this thread I may have to renew my contact with Bob & see whether one or two of his 7mm's would be of value in my latest project rifle.
