It should not bump all the shoulder. It will bump the outer part but not the inner part that is smaller then the .280. Matt

There are many reloaders that will say nothing can be done because there are too many variations and there is no standard.

If there was a standard the 280 Ackely Improved sizing die would size the case body and most of the shoulder of the 6.5-280 AI case except for ±.015” of the neck/shoulder juncture meaning the process would be similar to using a bushing die without the bushing.

You ask about a body die; it is impossible to move the shoulder on a case without case body support. And then there is the assumption the shoulder moves when the case is sized.

Standards; it has been possible for reloaders to size cases without sizing the neck, The 30/06 sizing die will size a 270 Winchester case body and most of the shoulder. Same with the 8mm06 sizing die when sizing the 30/06 case; again it is like sizing a case with a bushing die without the bushing.

A reloader could first lube the case and then place the case into the die while the die is being supported on a lead block and or a piece of wood. And then the reloader could find a straight punch that is smaller in diameter than the case head. With the drift the reloader could use a hammer to drive the case into the die. I would not suggest getting carried away with it but the case should conform to the internal dimensions of the die. If the reloader measured the length of the case before hammering it would be possible to determine the effect the driving had on the case.


And then; why drive the case into the die? The deck height of the shell holder would limit the dies ability to size the case because of the .125” deck height. Again, we want to know if the case will conform to the dimensions of the die.


Many years ago I did the same test on Wilson case gages.

I don't have the die...that's the problem.

I currently load for a 243AI (among a host of SAAMI cartridges). With the 243 improved I use a Redding neck die. When the bolt gets hard to close (about every 5th load), I use the Redding body die to bump the shoulder 0.003. This works like a champ. I've basically got an 8# coyote calling rifle that will shoot in the 0.2s @ 100 yds when the conditions are right & I do my part.

I'm currently building a 6.5x280AI. Same configuration & same smith as the 243AI. Hope to have it back from the smith in +/- 2 weeks & I'd like to load for it the same way due to the success I've had with the 243AI.

Problem is, a 6.5x280AI redding body die will have to be special order from Redding. Which I'm not opposed to, but if I could do the same thing w/ a 280 AI die that cost $31.49 & is currently available from Midway, that would obviously be preferable.

The difference will only be .25 mm wide on any radial. Unless I tried it I could not assess if it will even be noticeable, as the die will tend to drag the adjacent untouched ring with it, and any remaining false shoulder might be inconsequential. I would answer a qualified "yes" to the original question.

It should work fine. Of you bump the outer portion of the shoulder the inner portion should go too.
