? considering new rig pd, 400-750 yd

ok fellows, here is the ? I have had 22-250, 222 221 22lr and loved them out to 45/500 on the 22-250 13 twist,

now I have a 222m, shoots great and good velocity with 50gr bk for 400/450 max, in my opinion,

so what would you build to go to beyond 400 to 750 for pd - open question, I have brain traveled to 22-250ai faster twist, 6mm ai, 257 ai, etc. for grins -- your thoughts single feed not mag feed I am not in a rush too old for that

I shoot a 243 alot to 1000yds+. If I was building a "long range PD rifle" I would build a 243 or 243 ai or a 6 comp match just to take adavantage of the extra velocity that you can gain over the 6 br or 6 dasher. I would go with a 7 twist that way you can shoot anything from 95gr-115gr. That would be my build just because I have alot of experience with the 243 and like it.

My choices are as follows for prairie dogs:

0-300 yards - 223 (40-50's)
300-500 - 6BR (65-85's)
500-beyond - 6 Dasher (105's)

Of course there is a little overlap but this is a deadly deadly combination of rifles for prairie dogs.

My gunsmith has a 6mmRem necked to 22 cal. He has a 1-8 twist and shoots 75gr A-Max bullets out at a "comfortable" 3600f.p.s. He also said it is the most accurate varmint rifle he has. There would be no doubt of it's effectiveness out to 600-800 yards for prairie dogs..

Heck, even a .223AI, the BR case just has more oomph.....

I'm with 22Dasher. I use exactly those calibers and bullet weights at those distances. I also added a 4th. 6-284 with 105's for 1000 and beyond. With those western winds, the .22's just don't cut it.

I agree with Phil. A 22 BR has nearly 22-250 muscle with considerably less powder. My 1-9 Hart 27" 22BR running 69 SMKs will knock a prairie dog outta his socks @700 yards with ease. Velocity is 3400 fps or so with excellent accuracy.

I'm in a similar situation as you are. This will be my next project. I've basically narrowed it down to the 6 Dasher or the 6XC. Going to build it pretty heavy w/ a 1:8, 28" barrel.

Remember the OP said 400-750 yards. I like my 20vt also, but 750 aint happening.

I shoot my 22br out to 600 then I use a 6.5x284 for the long ones 800+ leaves a small gap but I'm ok with that. I am thinking that a 6x47 would fit your needs well. I shot a 243 and it worked great but I don't have enough room in the truck to bring a lot of guns.
When we go its 3 or 4 people, shooting tables, ammo, chairs, cooler, guns everyone brings atleast 2. And don't forget luggage.

you guys are great, I have been researching most of the calibers you have spoken of, and I am narrowing to the 6mm as I have a lot of experience with that, making BR 70gr hps for comp. when I was a couple of decades younger, Dietch dies Sierra jackets etc..
so now I am thinking the ? go with the really unique calibers or take the 6mm br, 243, 243ai 6mmrem, 6mmrem ai, brass is a given, hummmm!

I shoot in an area of Wy and others where the max realistically is 700-750 and my eyes are good with the implants but beyond that I pass. so the drift of 6mm is better than 22 and the weight of accuracy lies in the 70-90gr area no pushing for the world.

the more I look the closer I come to the 6mmrem AI with 26" bbl, use the 70sierra bk, --should go in the area of 3600fps and that I believe would be something else.

thoughts on twist?

I'd do a 12t. 3600 would be a cake walk with a 6AI. My old dasher's would send a 70gr. Nosler ballistic tip 3650+

IMO, the 87 grain vmax is one of the best p.d. bullets I've used.

If I were in your shoes, I would take inventory in the reloading room and choose a round that would push an 87 grain vmax to 3200 - 3300fps with mild pressures, or possibly a 105 grain amax at 3000 or so.

If you don't mind buying new brass, any of the recently developed rounds would work well, such as the 6xc, 6 Creedmoor, SLR, and so on. If you already have a good supply of brass for the 6mm Rem or 243 WIN, I'd recommend going with one of those.

John, you are right, the later "more modern" cases are more efficient, I just don't know them well as I have no experience with any of them, being an old poop 81 I find it hard to locate loading info for 70-87gr pills on these cases, so that turns me to the "old" 6mmai with published loading data.

I use my 204 AI out to 700 yards they all have 1-9 twist for the 55 bergers. Then after that comes 6 dasher with the 87 vmaxs. That's all I use, works great.
