stock ID. Supposedly McMillan.

I had a stock come in on a Rem 700 heavy barrel and was told it was McMillan. Is there any way to tell? There are no identifying marks on it. I'll get pics up soon.

McMillan's stocks don't normally come on Remington. HS Precision does. HS has full aluminum bedding block, McMillan usually does not..

hope this helps

take a couple pics and email them to mcmillan and they'll tell you. IIRC, there's a part of the website that details this service.

Look inside the BbL channel.
McMillans are marked mid point.
H&S usually have model numbers in BBl channel.

Thanks guys. There are no markings in the barrel channel and no aluminum bed block. The stock is very light but extremely stiff. It's been painted with automotive paint so it's hard to tell much about it.

It could be a Brown Precision Stock....they were/are? well made and sometimes confused with a McMillian because of their quality.

Post pictures, McMillan stocks have no branding anywhere on it. What you'll find in the barrel channel if it is a McMillan stock is a pressed number noting the machinist who inletted the stock.

Need pictures.

I just looked at 6 mcmillans and i see no mark pressed into the barrel channel nor have i ever. All are fully finished inletted from mcmillan. You can post a pic and we can identify it. I have seen the stamped in model on manners stocks. You can tell a mcmillan if you look in the mag cutout the fill can be scratched with a knife easily and looks kinda like that newspaper insulation they use in attics these days but solid

The barrel channel markings vary, and are a very imprecise method.

I have them with nothing, with "McMillan", and with my last name on stocks that I ordered to be built.

As others have said, post pictures. It should be easy to identify then.

Another "back from the dead" thread. No offense intended BLKWLF, but take a look at the dates when you reply to a thread. If it's older than a few pages, it's old....... The other thread you replied to was 11 years old. This one is only 2.5 yoa.

Yeah, I'm catching on to that.

Dusty, some 40X's came with McMillen's and they were stamped in front of the recoil lug, but these are the only ones that I have ever seen like this.

I did see a new 40x rimfire like that but i think remington must have been the stamper
I believe Remington stamped them. Cause I know for a fact, at least current stocks, only have a number in the barrel channel noting the machinist who inletted it. McMillan doesn't put their name on the product, unless it's on the rubber basket weave butt pad used on select stocks with certain hardware.
I asked why they don't put their name on it, and the answer I got was pretty much "I don't know".

Here's info from the website about this:

"31a. How can I tell if my stock is a McMillan?

There is no designation on the stock stating that it is a McMillan. If you bought a stock second hand and would like us to help identify it, please take a photo of the right and left sides of the stock and also a top picture of the inletting with the rifle removed from the stock. Then send the pictures to us via email."

I own at least one that is clearly marked (molded in) "MCMILLAN" in the bottom of the barrel channel.
Did you buy it directly from McMillan? Currently, the only markings made inside the barrel channel are the numbers noting who inletted it.
When I get a chance, I'll ask Kelly if they ever did do this. But as of current practice, and website info, they do not and they don't seem to hint at having ever doing so.
They may very well have in the past, but I personally doubt it.

Got a picture? And I'll put this question to rest. You could very well be right.

Keep in mind that McMillan sells many "flat top" stocks that are sold to gunsmiths to finish, inlett, paint, install hardware, etc. These gunsmiths do many things to the stocks that differ from how things are done at McMillan. Many order stocks from several manufacturers of fiberglass/composite stocks and may mark them themselves so as to avoid confusion.

The only stocks that I have seen stamped came from Remington and were SS 40X's, and this stock DOES NOT have an al bedding block installed.

Mine looks exactly like the picture above, but was not on a stainless 40-X. It is a sporter style stock, for a standard barrel contour, and was not on a factory rifle.

I also have McMillans with my last name in the barrel channel, but you probably doubt that too.
