No Redding Competition Neck Sizing Set for the 6.5x47 Lapua?

Gentlemen,
I'm having a rifle built(Dave Tooley), BAT action, Bix'n Andy Trigger, Bartlein 5R Barrel, McMillan Sako Varmint Stock, etc, and I cannot find a full Redding Competition Bushing Neck Die set made for the 6.5x47 Lapua... They make them for every other odd ball cartridge on the market but the likely one of the most accurate NON BENCHREST cartridges to be designed in the last 10 years does not get the same coverage as the 6.8mm Remington SPC of all things. No kidding that is the next cartridge in Category II of Redding's Die Chart and it merits a full Competition Die Set whereas the 6.5x47 Lapua does not? What am I missing here? I shoot in volume and don't think hand dies are my answer, however, I'm truly perplexed with Redding on this one... Thoughts?

fwiw,
I'm aware how they work... I know how to get by with the FL S type Neck Sizers. It still does not make sense, to me, of why they offer Competition Sets for every goof ball cartridge out there(.300 AAC Black Out, 6.8mm Rem SPC, Etc.) and they don't make a set for the 6.5x47 Lapua. Let's put ASIDE for a moment your decision not "spend the big coin" and merely ask the question for those who might... Does it seem strange to anyone else? I know the work around, however, this is the last cartridge I was expecting to have to go that route...fwiw & imho

Regards, Matt.

To answer your question Matt i would say to call redding to confirm they don't carry them as they may not update their website just for the sake of having to add several cartridges..

Short of that I wouldn't hesitate to use a forster set , specifically their seating die.. If you have your heart set on purchasing a complete set forster can help you as well as whidden and they are both top notch , i would give forster the edge with regards to the seating die tho.

If you already have fired brass I would send harrels 3 or 5 pieces of brass that has only been neck sized (verified by measuring fore and after) and explain to them that you want to primarily neck size ... What they will most likely do is choose a die that is a zero and that will be pretty close to a neck size die provided your chamber isn't grossly oversized.

But in any event try calling Redding and let us know what they say.

Good luck

Gentlemen,
I was hoping for a simple answer on this question. I called Redding, and I've been a good, bordering on great customer to their's for 15 years, and I got to talk to a smart aleck named "Scott" who quibbled with everything that came out of my mouth. When I started reading out of the catalog to him, to meet his level of professional knowledge, he said they "did not make the die because the did not have the tooling to make the die". I asked to speak to someone over his pay grade. He refused... I've never dealt with a bigger "smart ass" who constantly down talked the entire conversation to me... I very well MAY have bought my last Redding Reloading Product. That young man is a real detriment to Redding...fwiw & imho.

Perhaps since Lapua is currently the only maker of 6.5x47L brass, Redding felt that their regular neck sizing die was a good match and there was no need for the micrometer adjustable die. Just a guess.

Also, just last week, I received great service from Scott at Redding, helping me out with additional parts for my case neck gage

John,
Scott may have been an prince with you last week, however, he was a jackass on the phone with me. I'm going to call this whole thing a misunderstanding... I generally hate drama and plan to talk to his supervisor ABOUT THE DIES NEXT WEEK. Whether he was an ass or whether I was an ass I suspect depends on who you ask... I do deal with people on the phone everyday and could not act like that and expect to get a return phone call. That said they don't offer a Comp Set for the 6XC either so there may actually be a reason behind it... Who knows.

Regards, Matt.

So you wrote here first asking us, then you called them and you are unhappy with the answer. Got it.

I like Redding products and their customer service. Sorry to hear you ran into a smart ass but I wouldn't let him influence you too much. I have no idea why they don't make the 6.5x47 competition die, seems like they would sell enough to make it worth their while.

I just had a 6.5x47 made, a 6x47 made too. I ordered Whidden dies, full length bushing sets. They stock them, shipped them fast, were a pleasure to talk to and the dies are doing are great job, I really like them.

Good luck Matt

I cant believe anybody even makes a neck die these days

I am very content using Wilson neck sizing dies for my 6BR and 6.5 x 47 Lapua. My cases are very concentric with extremely low run out. When I need to bump the shoulder, I use a Redding body die. It works for me.

snert,
You seem to have a grasp on the situation. Yes I did ask here first. I thought someone here would likely know, as the guys who are the sharp point of the stick typically post, or at least ghost, these forums. Then I called and was unhappy with how the answer was relayed. Not the answer. Two completely different things... Had the young man had a touch of customer service, a little humor, and acted a little less like the prototypical "My dad owns the company" sort I thing we would have had a pleasant conversation. I certainly had no reason to take issue with him over Reddings choice not to offer a Competition die set. My issue with him came from a dead pan, smart ass, complete lack of grace, or humor type of response... That was where the the issue cropped up. However, I am glad you get it... Would worry me if you did not.

nakneker,
I've been real happy with Redding through the years. One smart ass does not a company make or break. I'm going to call back and speak with someone else and see if we can't find an answer to the original question. There may be a reason behind it, however, as they make the set for the 6.5 Creedmoor I find it hard to imagine. That said I'm going to run it buy by a chief as I've struck out with one particular indian...(grin)

Dusty,
Neck sizing only or neck sizing bushings on a full length die S type die as well?

I should likely have a custom reamer cut for this build and a custom sizing die made to the reamer and brass specifications. Harrell's or Jim Carstenson?

DT,
I've looked and I cannot find it... I've talked to Redding and they have confirmed they do not make it. Could you provide a link? I'm not doubting you here, I just cannot find it. Nothing would make me happier than to find a set and be able to drop the matter after my discussion on Monday...

Regards, Matt.

Id go with whidden Matt.
And yes the sharp points of the redding stick have posted here on this thread.

Dusty,
I appreciate the recommendation on Whidden. I may give them a call after I speak with Mr. Sharpless. Hoping to salvage what has been a positive working arrangement and frankly I like the product. Not to say the market is cornered...

Regards, Matt.
