Bolt Handle Jumps When Sear Released

Getting back to basics here and doing some dry fire practice. I'm noticing that the bolt handle on my REM 700SA jumps up when the firing pin falls. Sometimes the movement is enough to move the sights an inch or so off target. Is there something wrong here and if so, what needs to be done to fix it.

When you close the bolt handle the sear is pushing the rear of the bolt up. The root of the bolt handle is hard against the receiver. When you pull the trigger the rear of the bolt body drops down and the the bolt rotates slightly counter clockwise because the root of the bolt handle is contacting the action. The remedy is tighter bolt clearance so the bolt cant drop as far. The other issue is loose tolerances between the shroud and bolt, PTG makes an over sized shroud you can fit to the bolt to fix that. You also want to remove your trigger and close the bolt. Looking from the bottom make sure the cocking piece is not hitting the bolt body opposite the cocking ramp. Handle jump is common and does not necessarily mean you have a problem.

Try raising the bolt handle just a smidge and comparing how the rifle dry fires. It could be that the bold handle not indexed on the bolt body quite right. If you remove the striker assembly and insert the bolt in the action, you should be able to see how the right side of the groove in the action aligns with the straight side of the notch that has the cocking cam on the opposite side. Of course without the rifle in front of me, this is just a guess.

A good chance that Boyd is correct. The problem can be rectified somewhat by soft soldering a pad under the bolt handle between it and the receiver.

are you doing the dry firing with a case in the chamber? If not put an empty case with a spent primer and see what happens. Even a empty case with a live primer if your at the range. This will keep the firing pin from hitting the bolt.

Issue-
Firing pin striker/cocking piece is hitting bolt body machined/longitudinal surface opposite firing pin cocking cam surface since the handle is radially out of time to the bolt body.

Re-LOCATING the bolt handle(fwd/aft) by conventional means(silver braze or screws) will not fix the issue.

Simple fix w/ thousands repaired.

Choose wisely!
