Scope Crosshairs jump when I dry fire??

When I dry fire my Rem 700 from my in my rest set up, the cross hairs jump about an inch upward at 100 yards. I have also noticed that the bolt handle jumps when I dry fire. When I insert a fired case (with spent primer) I do not get the movement, either of the bolt handle or the crosshairs on target. Should I be concerned? What to do about it?

You have two choices
(1) Don't dry fire
(2) Pratice with a fireing pin stop removeing the the vibration jump .
I don't know if they make a insert for the 700 . Fireing pin .
Snap caps Or case with with a primer . Larry

I'm kind of glad that you created this thread. I also was troubled by this occurrence, initially thinking that my crosshair might be loose. What I didn't realize is how much this vibration is dampened when using a case with a spent primer in place.
I just gave it a try, and I feel at least a little mobetta now. jd

What I was getting at was if something was wrong with my setup that I needed to fix. I'm getting the occasional flyer and was wondering if that could be the cause.

HT,
What scope are you using? If its doing that when you dry fire, something must be wrong as it would be amplified on an actual discharge of a live round. I'd send the scope in to the manufacturer to be checked and cleaned if I had a scope that does that. Just my .02 wroth. The bolt handle jump is not unusual for a somewhat loose Rem 700 receiver and that is caused by an aggressive firing pin spring.

Scope is a Zeiss that I've been very pleased with so far. Added piece of info--if I raise the bolt handle just a hair before I dry fire, I get no bolt jump or movement on target. Is this some sort of bolt timing issue? I could be overthinking this:confused:

You may have a timing issue. Or you may not. Some bolt handle lift on dry fire is normal. When the top lever releases the cocking piece in the bolt the rear of the bolt body no longer has that upward pressure. That allows the the rear of the bolt to drop, when that happens the bolt handle will lift a little because its seated against the action. Take the firing pin assm. out and be sure the the cocking piece is not hitting the bolt. 2:30 on the youtube video
