Suggestions re new rifle case....

walker2713

My Boy Hap....
I've got several bolt action hunting style rifles, and the only cases I've got are a pretty flimsy, cloth single rifle case, and a pretty good aluminum 2-rifle case which is heavy.

Can someone recommend a reasonably inexpensive single rifle case that will give my guns the protection they need when traveling?

Thanks, George

You might look at Plano Air glide on Amazon and other places...I bought one several years ago and is excellent for my LR rifle to range and back...be fine for travel... may want something better for air travel..sounds like you have that covered already...

What type of traveling? Air? Auto? Long distance? Overseas?

Just locally, and traveling out of state by car to hunt....
I have a couple of the Plano Vertical scope cases. They'll keep scoped guns secure but they are unwieldy and don't stack. Their "pillared" styles are ok and stack flat and are inexpensive. All can be bought through Amazon.

I'm looking for a lighter case for air travel. Can I ask what it weighs empty?
TIA, Hog
The description on amazon says 18lbs. I'll empty mine and see for sure.

Just checked it weighed 20lb on my bath scale. I don't know if you're going to get a light case that gives enough protection for those baggage handlers. This one has wheels in the base of it.

Walker,
If you have a Cabelas or Bass Pro shop near you, go take a look as they have a variety of "gun cases" that you can see first hand and sometimes go on sale, which would save you shipping costs. For me, that's better than relying on someone else's recommendations as you know your own personal needs and uses the best.

I got one of these at Cabelas for longer rifles. It's 52" (inside measurement).

what is the cost associated with checking a gun as luggage on a flight? Is there a charge by weight?

I have a Pelican 1750 that I've upgraded with eggshell foam (eBay). There is a model (something like 1752) that comes with egg shell by default but I've never seen it sold for a reasonable price. It's a water tight case and can take a beating. This is definitively the right option for heavy travel.

I definitely prefer using eggshell vs custom cut foam. That way you can use the same case to hold multiple configurations of rifles and accessories. I built a hot wire cutter and did the whole cut foam deal, it was very inconvient. Egg foam holds perfectly well for rifles.

The problem with the 1750 is it's very heavy. I also have a lighter case from voltquartsen which is lighter but not nearly as durable (durable enough for normal non-travel use). One downside is the handle pinches your hand if not closed properly.

Those Plano cases mentioned look like a good option. I saw when it was on sale and would have picked one up if my house wasn't already cluttered with cases.

Mainly depends on the airline but the size, the weight, countries transiting and final destination are all factors. Shipping firearms by air isn't a one size fits all. ICAO ammo regs (all air carriers) are 5 kilos not including the container (s).

Check your air carrier and country regulations lest you wind up back home without your firearms.

Just my two cents worth: Get an airline approved GOLF hard case. I got an SKB and really like it. Also helps that your case does not look like a weapons case. Especially if you disguise it with a couple cheap "Titleist" stickers or something. I can leave mine in view in the back seat & not worry so much about someone smashing in a window if I stop for dinner or something.
