Adding weight

I am going to be trying the F-class game this year and the rifle I want to shoot has too much recoil so where in or on a McMillan A5 can I add weight? Rifle as of now on a bathroom scale is 16lbs with glass. Thanks !

I just drilled a 1" dia. hole about 7" and installed a 1" steel bar (stabiler from my bow) 1.60 lb. and reinstall my butt plate. work great. If you dont have a steel bar, better yet is to fill the hole with buckshot because I think it would be heavier but dont epoxy it in , just in case you want to vary the weight. I think your weight limited is 17 lbs in that class but I could be wrong.

It's got adjustable cheek on it so I won't have that kind of room, and I guess I need to check and see what the weight limit is!

If a semi-permanent install is wanted...Devcon and lead shot. Barrel channel and in front of recoil pad. You will need to know your preferred balance point and weight required at each end before you start drilling. Have fun! Eric in DL

for something non permanent , go to a tire shop and ask to look at their stick on wheel weights. Take a caliper with you and measure the different weights so you will have an idea of what area your needed Wt. will cover.
Another option that will get seared out will be to add two threaded inserts to your stock so you can attach a weighted plate. Shooters might make fun but in the future when an Orthopedic surgeon tells you to limit your shooting to 223's and smaller or get a total shoulder replacement and still limit shooting to 223's .
To bad the rules don't allow for a brake with ports only on the top.

Mill out a big slot under the barrel channel and fill with fine lead shot and epoxy

Exactly what I did on a dedicated long range groundhog rifle.

Pretty much a permanent alteration (I sure don't want to grind out lead and deal with the dust), but it works great for me. Throws the balance a bit forward, but I shoot it off of a rucksack on the ground, so not a real detriment in my case.

If looking at a weight limit, "measure twice" before epoxying that stuff in!

Line the cavity with Saran Wrap (with your release agent of choice) and it'll pop right out. I've used it for filling in forend slots and magazine inlets with a mixture of #9 lead shot and epoxy.

Mill out a channel under the barrel. Width and depth will depend on how much weight you want to add. Put plenty of paste wax on the channel, then line it with Saran Wrap or something similar, more paste wax (or some type of mold release). Then add your mix of shot and dev-con or Marine Tex. Let it cure and you can pop it out. You can then epoxy in a few t-nuts or threaded inserts into the stock, drill corresponding holes in your lead weight (take it easy) and you have a removable weight that can be secured.

If I were you I would research mercury that can be added to the stock... Mainly the mercury will kill two birds with one stone.. It will add weight and it will also reduce recoil by providing momentum in the opposite direction upon recoil..

If you decide to add weight to the butt for balance reasons, there are a few things to consider.

If the A5 is sniper-fill, then the butt stock is filled with a material that is a lot more solid than an A5 that is filled with the standard foam type fill. I THINK yours is sniper filled because you said you have the adjustable cheekpiece installed.

The point is that you probably should look into the answer to this, so you know beforehand what you are getting into. If it is sniper fill, most any type of 1 inch drill bit (even spade type) will give you a clean and solid space for adding weight to the butt stock area. If it is the standard foam fill, IMO you should start with a new and sharp auger type bit....the foam can be torn out if using a spade bit and you are not careful. YMMV.

One more thing to consider. If you decide to use shot and do not want to permanently epoxy it in place, look into a product called duct seal. You can buy this in most hardware stores and it is very cheap. It is a heavy and thick putty type material that is used to seal around cables that enter the outside of homes. It is DEAD SOFT and tacky, and will not harden completely over time. Just mix the shot into this stuff like you are kneading bread dough. Take a small amount at a time and dowel rod it into the hole like you are loading a cannon. Best part is it can be removed (by just using a slightly smaller drill bit) because it never fully hardens.

Like mercury shotgun recoil reducers .

Yea, or you could be custom about it by purchasing a tall, round glass vial, with a screw on lid, from a lab or medical supply shop.. Add as much mercury as required so when the vial is held sideways and moved quickly in one direction or the other that the mercury will move and impart it's force in the opposite direction..

Rocket Science.

I took off the butt plate and spacers and I can't get into the butt unless I drill through the last black plate. I also have a strip up front that I can put lead into.
