221 fireball load with 60 gr bullets.

Anyone have a load using a 60 grain bullet. I have a cz 527 with 1 in 12 twist. H322, IMR 4198, R7, BLC2,8208, H4198 and Lil gun powders are what I have.

Not sure what your intended use is for such a load, but after checking in manuals from virtually every bullet and powder maker, I do not see any 221FB loads listed with 60gr bullets, the maximum bullet weight listed for that caliber is 55grs.

Do you think the mfgr's are trying to say something here?.........

I couldn't find any information anywhere either. I had some 60 gr. Bergers. So I thought I would experiment.

The Hodgdon site has no rifle data for 60 gr. bullets but does have some pistol data for 60 gr. bullets using H4227 and H4198.

Thanks just checked it out.

Don't think it would be feasible in the 221 fireball. I have shot some 52's, for fun, but wouldn't load them for any "action", so to speak.. I since stuck to 40's-50's...

I tried the 60gr. V-Max in my 12 twist Fireball with 16grs. of IMR4198. No pressure signs at all with that load in my rifle, but the accuracy was not up to par with the 53-55gr. bullets. I was getting .7 to .8 groups with them, which is considerably larger than what this gun shoots with the lighter 53-55gr. bullets.

I did not try any other powders than the IMR4198.

Hope this helps.

Alan

If I was going to try it, I would pick one of the slower powders for 55gr bullets in that case and reduce it's starting charge 15% and work up from there. From Hodgden's web data for a couple that you listed that you have, that would be 16gr H322 and 14.2gr of H4198 for a starting point.

Hi to all. New on this board. I was scanning for info on the 221 Fireball and thought I could add a little info to this thread. I scanned this out of a Remington reloading manual from 2003. Hope it will help someone.
