Anyone shooting 4895 in there dasher

Yes, it's harsh on em. But Alicia likes when I wear them out. We wouldn't want her to starve without any chamber work to do.

In all honesty, I get 2 really good seasons out of a dasher barrel. But i test a LOT of things, besides just shooting matches. Erosion is probably quicker, and the fire cracking also. This is why I won't use a bore scope on my own barrels anymore lol. Once I have a couple matches on one, I don't even want to know how bad it looks. I suspect there's more to be had, but I just love the tuning/testing of new steel.

Gosh damn I wish more people had your mindset!!!

Like any form of racing , ultimate performance has it's downside, whether longevity or otherwise, to some ultimate accuracy, speed or just playing around is worth it, I understand and appreciate that. Good info, thanks.

It's the honest truth. I LOVE fooling, tinkering with anything one could possibly think of. If you have wondered about it, no matter how silly it is, I have probably tested it lol.

The matches are WORK!

Tom
What else could you do in Montana in January or February? Matt

anyone else finding H4895 harsh on the barrels?

My first Dasher that I ran 32.6 grains of H4895 for 3 seasons gave up the ghost last year, only had 900 rounds thru it. I monitored the barrel from day 1 with my bore scope and throat moved about .028. Firecracking was bad enough to warrant a setback which I had done and now all is good again. My 2nd Dasher has roughly 700 rounds thru it and as of end of last season was still shooting well but I am watching it closely. I may be switching powders this spring.

No, this powder sucks in just about every caliber you can use it in. Don't bother with it...I know varget and Reloader are at times tough to come by, but just leave H4895 alone. You'll be better off:(

Hi Frank, what powders are you thinking about.

I ran it exclusively last yr in one barrel for F Class, it was shooting great.... After 1000 rds it wasn't the same, tried some diff loads with no luck.
Maybe thats all that barrel had to give but I was disappointed.

Hmmm, might have to stop using H4895 fire-forming if it causes damage, kid(11) shoots quarter in groups with 5 rounds fire-forming all the time.

Joe, probably going to look at RL-15 real hard. The H4895 worked so well for me that I never gave it a thought about barrel longevity but evidently its not there. I'd be real happy to get 1500 rounds out of a barrel before setback.

As an edit my first Dasher barrel is a Broughton 5C and my LG Dasher sports a Rock Creek barrel.

2 and 3 seasons in a dasher with 4895... How many rounds a season? Just trying to get a round count on shooting out a barrel with it.

Today I did a seating depth test with 105 Amaxes with 31.4 grains of h4895 . I loade up 4 at 5thousandths jam 4 at 5 thousandths jump and 4 at 15 thousandths jump . Results were at 5 thousandths jam a .532 group at 5 thousandths jump .192 group and 15 thousandths jump .203 . Next weekend I'm gonna try the .5ths jump with Berger 105s and Sierra 107s . To see how they shoot . Then I'm gonna try a few loads of Varget and rl15 and mabey another charge of h4895 . So far I'm impressed with the h4895 . But I'm hoping that the Varget does better

Interesting reading here. I'd not have guessed that 4895 was that much of a barrel burner. But obviously it must be.

So, do you use 4895 and place well in matches and just plan on rebarreling every year or two? Or change powder and risk being not as competitive for a few years and save the barrel? Just curious as to everyone's mindset. WD

Not knocking h4895 but I don't believe it is a save all powder in the dasher. In our groundhog matches some shooters have been winning with h4895 and others have been winning with varget and r15. It could be a case of what your barrel likes.

Whatever combination of components that shoots the smallest consistantly at LR would get my vote.
