6x47 Lapua 87 gr vmax

A friend of mine is wanting to build a short (20") barreled rifle for coyote hunting. I am trying to sell him on the 6x47L. I can't seem to find much of any data on loads for the 87 gr hornady vmax out of the 6x47.

Is anyone using the 87s in their 6x47L? What loads are you running? Velocity? Accuracy? Barrel length? How complicated is it to size the 6.5x47 Lapua brass down to 6x47?

Sizing is super easy. Just run it through your die. Sorry i do not have any loads. I dont shoot stuff that light.

I tried a few 87 grain vmax's out of mine and they shot very well with Varget. I don't remember the exact load. I just stuck with the 105 VLDs

By all accounts, the 87Vmax is a coyote smasher, extraordinaire!
Have shot alot of those bullets out of a .243Win, and now 6x45AI They are plenty accurate for field shooting, cheap and kill without inpunity. Not pelt friendly @ .243Win speeds...Damage Inc.
My little 6x45AI throws them @ 2875 from only a ~25gr charge.
87Vmax, 3 & 5 shots @ 100, .010" off the lands. That'll do for coyote detail...

I'd think the 6x47L would be a nice platform to launch them from & bet they'd crowd 3150 from a 20" barrel.
Having a 6x47L built now for 105/115s, but will try the good ol' 87Vmaxs, just for a goof.

Have fun!!!

Nice shootin. What powder do you use for the 87's?

we load 42grs h-4350 with 88gr bergers @ 3185fps 24in bbl. you will probably be about 100fps less. this shoots okay but gun just loves 105gr bergers.

Is that target from the 6x45AI? What powder you using?

I favour the Berger FB 88g... Out of a 29" barrel using 41.2g RL17 speed is 3,250fps. I have taken 179 foxes with this mix in the last 30 months.

Is there anything left of them?? ;) Pelt? Or are you just wanting to do your "civic duty" and have some fun along the way. I'm checking now to see where you hale from.\

AHA!!! Just as I surmised.........Merry Olde E. Those lamb raisers must send you a nice basket of goodies at Christmas. Good work.

I would run h4350 or re17 and you should be running about 3000-3100 with a 20" tube depending on how hard you want to push it. I'd also use a 10 twist to help with speed do to the short barrel if he never plans on running 105's.

With a straight on shot they will stay inside. If broadside shoot behind the shoulder missing any shoulder bones and the exit will be from .5 to 1.0 inches. Easily sown up. Never lost a coyote with the V-max.

That's good to hear, although I think you are the only person so far I have heard that type of response from lol. Everyone else claims that the 87 vmax wrecks havoc on pelts. I know my 95 vmaxes that i shoot out of my 6.5x47 Lapua @ 3200 fps sure make a mess out of them... I'll pass on the info to him so as not to count the vmax out just yet.

I am shooting the V-max from my 22" 6 Dasher at about 2950 fps. Bullet placement is very critical. Do not hit around the edges as they will blow. Lol.

I agree.

A raking shot/heavy bone impact will be ugly. One of my calling buds shoots 87VMaxs from his 243Win., and things can get exponentially more messy at .243Win speeds.

The four coyotes I've shot center mass with the 87s @ 6x45AI speeds have resulted in 1" or less, exits.

As for the 88Berger, have another pard with a badazz .243Catbird. It launches 88s at warp speed into a tiny bughole. But, he's had them zip thru coyotes on more than one occasion, resulting in unrecovered animals. Hard to believe with alll that horsepower & energy, but he gave up on them for coyote detail...

The 87 Vmax isn't sexy sleek, and even kinda boring, but it shoots well, very economical, and kills the crap outta critters!

Im shooting the 88's in 243 win and haven't had one run yet. Had one last year take one center chest and was still breathing after a 35 yard shot. I hit bones a couple times this season and had to leave them lay. Seems like the Vmaxs are susceptible to flyers and massive holes. Yotes stay down tho. I don't get flyers with the Bergers and they weigh and measure 10x better than the Vmaxs.

I'm shooting 87 gr V Max' s in my Custom XP 100R handgun chambered in 6x47 Lapua and a 15" 9 twist barrel. Shooting H 4350 39.2 gr and shoots 2,850 fps she shoots 1/2 MOA out to 450 yards going to try to push it out to 600 this summer. I think the 87gr is a good combo for the 6x47L but moving to 95 VLD's only for BC @ longer distance.
