Building a 1911 thread

I want to build myself a very nice high quality custom 1911... sure i could go buy one, buy wheres the fun in that!

Where do you even start?
Where would i find high quality parts?

I know of STI, dan wesson, les bear etc etc.. id like to build something on that kind of tier, top shelf... otherwise i may as well go buy a factory gun...

I'd start on a pistol forum, preferably one specializing in 1911's.

Then start searching through YouTube videos.

Like Google/Bing for info, if you can't find a video on YouTube concerning almost ANYTHING, including how to build a 1911, then it just doesn't exist.

www.brownells.com

Pages and pages and pages of 1911 pieces, parts, and stuff.

That should get you at least started in the right direction.

STI used to offer matched Frame and Slide, check on that, Caspian would be my next choice, get them with sight cuts. Lap those together, and fit a barrel, the rest is easy, shop for whatever trigger, grip, sights you want.
Look into Kart Barrels, they have EZ fit , I have used them and they are fantastic.

I did most of the build on the 1911 I used to become a Distinguished Pistol Shot with, and it's nice knowing I did most of the work. but the big thing about that gun was I used my buddies tools and guidance. He did the final critical fittings and trigger job. I have several other 1911's now and my advice to you is if you want one nice 1911 then buy the parts you want and send them to a quality gunsmith because the amount you will spend in quality tools with far out cost what you will pay a gunsmith. That is for one pistol, if you want several well there will be a break even point but my gunsmith have several thousands of dollars in tools, files, jigs and the list goes on and on. He only charges me $250 to fit a gun so why would I not go with him?

I think you should look at all the costs to do the job right (you did say quality 1911) and not get hung up on "I built it myself." gunsmiths earn that money not only in knowledge but in having the proper tools to do the job right.

either way, good luck.
