Just received new Nightforce with 4 year old inspection date.. thoughts?

So I have been looking looking and looking for this scope and found one from some help on here from a place in TX. Everyone I normally deal with is and has been sold out. Called and they said they had two I had it in few days. Well seal had been broken on the box and when I opened the inspection date was 02-2012. I called Nightforce the build was 2011. It doesn't look like it has been mounted but handled.

Its a 12x42x56 benchrest NPR2 Reticle. The place is closed on Mondays. So what would you guys do mount it and shoot away? Send it back? I am just confused on why so old. I paid full price and don't want a floor unit etc for full price.

i would call them tomorrow and voice my concerns. I would also call Nightforce and let them know where you bought it if your dealings are not resolved satisfactorily. I think that your scope will be fine. Personally I would return it (and insist they pay return postage) and buy from Eurooptic. I have 4 NF scopes from them and they are great to deal with.

Out of curiosity, what color is the lettering and hash marks on the scope?

If it's only 4 yrs old they should be white. I'm pretty sure some of mine are older than that and they are white.

David, are you trying to snag a gold letter version? :p

If it looks unmounted and possibly just handled, I personally would mount it and shoot it. If you happen to have a problem Nightforce will take care of it.

I'd mount it and shoot it, they aren't delicate. (mine have thousands of rounds under them) It's kind of the point of getting a NF in the first place.

If there are no cosmetic issues why are you worried? NF would've told you if it had been a refurb. The likely scenario is it's just a slow moving product for that shop.

If there's more than a cosmetic difference, I'd return it. If Nightforce says there's no difference other than cosmetic, shoot it.

I would like to think that some of the technology, glass, materials used in a scope today is better that it was in 2011 which is part of the reason you get a "new" scope. But I have plenty of scopes older than 2011 that work very well.

I would call Nighforce . They can tell you if the scope is ok or is one that is a repair or a china knock off . Larry

If seal was broken I wouldn't be happy at all. Not the inspection date but the fact the seal was broken. I saw a 12-42 NXS break on an FTR rifle on day two of an international teams match. It was fine the day before which finished on 1000 yards. Next day started at 800 and the thing wouldn't even get on paper. NF totally rebuilt it. I suspect it may have been to do with it being totally maxed out in elevation to reach 1000 and didn't come back off it (despite being re adjusted) the next day for the 800. My take away is when an NXS does go - it goes in a big way - very easy to determine.

They are robust scopes and while sh1t does happen with them its not often so you are most likely going to be fine, but I would have thought it rare these days to have an "old" new 12-42 laying round as they are hard to get a hold of and still seem to be reasonably sought after.

Up to you if you feel comfortable on the money paid for a broken seal box - 12-42s aren't easy to get so that might be the price you have to pay.

I certainly would not pay today's full retail price for a product that's been on the shelf for 4 years. I believe NF retail prices in 2012 were around $1,359 vs. the $1,428 price today. In addition, you had a broken seal on the box and a questionable inspection date.

I'd contact the retailer and request they send you the other 12-42x they had if it's newer for a swap at their cost to ship insured and go from there. If they are completely standoff-ish, then I'd contact NF directly and share your experience with them.

Thanks guys I called and the "other" one they have is a display unit. I asked guy why it is so old and why the seal is broken. He advised they dont move many and they have to read serial number for inventory. I asked if this was a display he didnt "think" so. The guy was short and not helpful. I sent an email advising of situation. Ill let you guys know thanks for the replies

I called nightforce they said no changes have been made and if I have issues they will make it right. I guess ill mount and shoot.

I have bought 7 NightForce scopes and the seals were broken on all of them. Most potential buyers want to see them just like they want to see the rifle their buying. I have never had any trouble with any of my NF scopes. I believe you are in good shape especially with NF stating they will back it up. You can't beat that.

Mount it and start shooting. Let us know how it works out for you.

Dennis

PS: I can personally attest NightForce stands behind their products. Out of the 7 I have bought, I had an accident with one, clearly my fault. I sent it to NightForce fully expecting to receive an estimate of repairs. To my surprise, I receive a fully flawless refurbished scope which I am still using to this day. In fact, I don't even know which one it is now as all of them operate perfectly.

Well there is Zero left in the country that me and nightforce can find so as much as id not like to im going to mount and shoot this one as Nightforce was super about it and said look if you have any issues we will get it fixed FAST.

The dealer would not honor old pricing, store credit nothing. But as much as id like to send it back Ill just move on with life. Thanks guys for all of your help.

I would be shocked if you had any problems with your NightForce. Mount it and shoot. I am sure you will be happy.

Have you tried D & B Supply in Camerton N.C. Bill Shehane. He is long time Benchrest shooter and great guy. Also one of the largest Nightforce dealers in eastern USA.

I wouldn't care about the inspection date. AFAIK, the NF BR hasn't changed demonstrably in years.

The broken seal would bother me.

If there were two scopes for sale, one advertised as "NEW" the other as "NEW, open box", which would you prefer? Would you expect to pay the same?

In my mind, "NEW" means unopened, unhandled, and unused. If the seal is broken, than at least one of those things is no longer true.

Once the seal is open you have no idea what really happened with that scope. Opened to show a customer who declined to buy? Display model? Used and returned? It's why NF put a seal there in the first place.

"have to read serial number for inventory" is either a stupid business practice, or a lie.

Personally, I have purchased 6-7 NF scopes from various online vendors. ALL of them have showed up sealed in their box.

All that said, the scope is likely A-OK, and if not, I'm sure NF will get it fixed pronto.
