Was there ever a H4198 SC ?

I have used quite a bit of H4831 SC, but have never seen any H4198 labeled as H4198 SC. I know that the new stuff is called "Extreme" but did Hodgdon ever label any as H4198 SC? Thanks, James Mock

SC is "short cut" as in shorter kernels for easier and more consistent during dispensing.
SC has nothing to do with if a powder is labeled Extreme or not. They get that moniker is the powder has been reformulated to provide more constant results in a broad temperature range.
To my knowledge a short cut H4198 has never existed.

I have been using H4198 for 30+ years . Never heard of SC in that powder. Tommy Mc

My understanding is that H4831SC was developed because the longer kernels of H4831 didn’t meter too well in an auto trickler. There was no need to develop an SC version of H4198 because the kernels are small enough that they meter just fine. I have used the H4831 and H4831SC with an auto trickler and indeed the SC version meters better, easier to hit the weight target when the individual kernels don’t weigh as much. No problem using H4198 in an auto trickler.

Yes there was. When I lived in PA, early 90s, stopped into Bruno's shop in Hazleton. He sold me a pound. It says on the label in small print under the H4198 "A shortened grain for easy measuring". It's Australian powder.

It's still in the closet & has a lot # of 265.1D0293. There was no SC designation on the bottle. If my camera worked I'd post a picture. I vaguely remember 4198 being like little needles, so this length may have become the norm since early 90s.

I use H4198 for my 30BR. I like to throw my charges for speed and simplicity. H4198 is right on the edge of being too big. If they made it is shorter, I'd buy it.

Loaded some 17-222 rounds with this the other day.

ive shot my share of H4198 and it meters just fine, this target was used with a click style powder measure. If you like speed and simplicity this does it. A target from a 300yd group shoot shooting 108‘s 30 cal at 3200fps in a 30BR

That's some good shooting there! I've dropped thousands of powder charges as well, but I'll stick with my original assessment. It meters okay, but it is on the edge of being too large IMO. My groups are fine, but if there was an option for smaller kernels, I'd buy it up in a heartbeat. It sure don't meter like H322.

The original IMR or Dupont 4198 did have longer kernels and when Hodgdon came out with their 4198 version it of course had much smaller kernels.
