Looking for a gunsmith with a 30-06AI or 30 Gibbs Reamer

I have a 308 barrel that I need rechambered for a long action build. I want something different and that will clean up a 308 chamber. If anyone out there knows a good smith with a reamer on hand let me know.

HI John,,,,,dont forget that the .308 is .003 bigger at the .200 line than the 30-06/280 base case,,,,.003 doesnt sound like much but it is !!!,,,,the reamer will not clean up a .308 chamber,,,we tried it and the reamer didnt even take the blue outa the rear of the chamber,,,,you will loose the primer pockets quickly ,,,,if you had a 30-06 bbl you could prolly get away with it,,,,but the original neck dia would prolly be bigger than what most well designed 30-06 wildcats would be ,,,,think about it,,,,Roger

So shy of going to a magnum case, do I have any options on this barrel that don't require setting it back? How about the Gibbs case, does the reduced body taper allow for the chamber to get cleaned up?

HI John,,,,the Gibbs version still uses a 30-06 parent case,,,no matter what the taper is ,,,it has to start with the base line and it is smaller than .308,,,,,you can do it ,,,but it will be a cobbled up mess that will give you ctgs that are hard to load,,(they are wayyy bigger than the die and you will be jumpin up -n-down on the handle,,)and case life will be short,,,,guys do things like this every day and have problems and cant figger out why,,,,,you see lots of non-wildcat chambers cut with reamers that are too big at the back causing primer pockets to go away prematurely,,,,there is a thread on here now about a 308 Palma rifle being fired with mild loads and the primer pockets going away,,,and they are blaming the primers,,,,hahaha,,,,Roger

Look slike I'll buy buying a new barrel or possible making a 300WM. I think I have a magnum bolt around here some place, so maybe this thing will get turned into a big gun.

THanks,

And you could try this too:

Reamers and dies are available, and it duplicates .30-06 performance.

I would go with the 300WM. There is no rule that says you have to load up to max. You can find an accurate load at 30-06 velocities or below and have a large range to work with.

What kind of barrel and what chamber ? If its a Palma or match chamber the .200 readings are the same as 30-06 , at least in D KIFFS CHAMBER PRINTS book. I've not had any issues in the 15 -18 I've done . Including 243 to 6-06 AI.
But unless you can do the work yourself it IS NOT A COST EFFECTIVE option.
The set up is the same as a new barrel , sometimes even longer.

Pacnor re-barreled my Post 64 Winchester to 30/06 AI. JGS reamer
I was very pleased with the work.
My goal was to increase the muzzle velocity by a min of 100 fps.
My load with a 168 berger is averaging 2975 +/-.
Spend some time discussing which bullet you intend to use.

I would think an AI improved 30-06 would not give more than 1-2% more velocity at the same pressure. Case capacity is not increased that much the AI 30-06. I shot one for years and velocity gain was about 50fps with 180s.

In a old American rifleman they compared the 30/06 and the 30/06AI. Velocity gains were not very impressive.
I did go with a 26" barrel.
When I started this project the goal was to increase MV by 100 fps.
I would not change the project, accuracy has returned with the velocity gain desired.

This makes no sense to me
Pleas explain ferther
The base being too large in my mind has no Bering on primer pockets
Now if headspace it too far forward because it’s reamed too deep base will be too large
That will cause the firing pin do drive the case forward and brass flows back and will flatten primers
The danger in this is premature case head separation in as low as 3 loadings
Fixed many 30-06 ak they wer chambered by hand and not set back.
